Job Description

Job Purpose

The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing project and organizational financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong internal controls. The role provides strategic support in budgeting, tax compliance, financial reporting, and audit readiness. The Senior Accountant will lead the integrity of financial systems, strengthen financial processes, and provide expert guidance to management and project teams.

Key Responsibilities 

1. Financial Management & Record-Keeping

  • Oversee and authorize processing of invoices, payments, reimbursements, and project-related financial transactions.
  • Ensure timely and accurate maintenance of financial records in the accounting system.
  • Review and approve journal entries, ensuring proper classification and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Lead monthly reconciliations including bank, supplier, intercompany, and general ledger accounts, resolving complex discrepancies.

2. Budgeting, Forecasting & Expense Control

  • Lead preparation, review, and consolidation of project budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
  • Monitor actual expenditures against budgets and prepare variance analysis reports with actionable insights.
  • Ensure project spending aligns with approved workplans, donor requirements, and financial policies.
  • Advise management on cost optimization and resource allocation.

3. Compliance, Internal Controls & Audit

  • Ensure full compliance with internal policies, donor regulations, statutory requirements, and accounting standards (IFRS/GAAP).
  • Strengthen and enforce internal control systems to safeguard assets and prevent fraud, misstatements, and errors.
  • Lead audit preparations by maintaining complete, well‑organized documentation and supporting schedules.
  • Liaise with external auditors and ensure timely resolution of audit findings and recommendations.

4. Financial Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare, review, and present periodic financial reports to senior management, donors, external partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure proper documentation of financial transactions, approvals, receipts, and project expenditure files.
  • Contribute to preparation of financial statements, project close-out reports, and grant financial summaries.

5. Tax Compliance & Statutory Reporting

  • Oversee timely preparation, filing, and reconciliation of all statutory taxes including VAT, withholding tax, PAYE, and corporate tax.
  • Ensure compliance with tax laws and proactively mitigate tax risks.
  • Maintain comprehensive tax schedules and ensure accuracy of tax provisions in financial statements.
  • Coordinate with tax consultants and management on complex tax matters and compliance requirements.
  • Respond to tax authority inquiries and ensure timely resolution to avoid penalties.
  • Maintain thorough documentation to support tax filings, audits, and reviews.
  • Provide tax compliance training to staff to strengthen organizational tax literacy.

6. Stakeholder Collaboration & Financial Advisory

  • Serve as the financial liaison with vendors, clients, project teams, and funding agencies.
  • Provide financial oversight in procurement processes, including review of purchase requests and supplier evaluations.
  • Address financial inquiries from project managers and other departments with timely and accurate guidance.
  • Support donor compliance by ensuring financial components of grants are properly administered.

7. Problem Solving, Systems Enhancement & Leadership

  • Identify and resolve complex financial and inventory management issues.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and financial transparency.
  • Support capacity building of junior accounting staff through mentorship and technical guidance.
  • Contribute to strengthening ERP and financial systems for better reporting and control.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Mathematics, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in project accounting, or a similar role, preferably in the construction or engineering industry.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of financial and accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in accounting and inventory management software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle) and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
