We are currently seeking a senior-level Mechanical Engineer for defense product development projects. These projects range from front end proof of principle concepts to evaluate feasibility of new product requirements, up through the introduction into manufacturing of low, mid, and high volume products. This position requires fluency in all aspects of the new product development process up through introduction into manufacturing, working with small teams, and the ability to take the technical lead on mechanical engineering aspects of the project. This position also includes mentorship and guidance of junior resources, and support of proposal development.

A successful candidate should be able to see the “big picture” and be concerned with engineering issues from a systems level. In addition, this candidate must be able to work independently with the ability to perform engineering analyses, solve problems, be creative, and add value to the efforts of the group without extensive supervisor interaction. An important element of the job is being able to “change gears” quickly, moving from task to task without difficulty.

Job Description

Successful candidates must have demonstrated capabilities in the following:

  • Successful track record for R&D or new product development at a principal level (mentoring and guiding  junior staff, ownership of major systems/assemblies/product, and direct PM support)
  • Desire to grow into a project management role
  • Team skills with ability to work in small teams on fast-paced project
  • Fluency in manufacturing processes appropriate for product volume expectations
  • Experience in the development of, and appropriate techniques for breadboards, proof of principle units, and prototypes as part of the new product development process
  • Fluency with MCAD tools and RP techniques
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to support the preparation of proposals, develop estimates in support of sales activities

Qualifications

  • MS Degree + 8 years exp. preferred; BS Degree +10 years expel minimum
  • Experience with 3D modeling software (SolidWorks or Creo) (at least 5 years)
  • Experience with analysis, design, and integration of various complex mechanical systems and mechanism design particularly in the maritime and robotics domains
  • Experience with developing multi-disciplinary solutions (integration of electronics and software with mechanical systems)
  • Demonstrated experience in new product development and/or Research and Development programs, bringing new products and new technologies successfully to market
  • Demonstrated experience in DFM, DFA, and design for cost and reliability
  • Working knowledge of analysis software MathCad, Matlab/Simulink, and CFD package(s)
  • Experience with MS Office products
  • Experience providing technical concept and writing support for business development and proposals
  • Proven ability in a challenging technical and customer-focused environment;
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance
  • Must be a US citizen due to government contractual obligations

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with unmanned vehicles and robotics
  • Familiarity / Experience with underwater and/or harsh environment systems
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 desired
  • Skilled in presentation and working directly with US government and DoD customers
  • Experience in the defense industry a plus
  • No relocation
