Job Description
As project coordinator you will make your mark supporting the salvage master and his / her team by the preparation and subsequently the execution of salvage projects around the world. The working atmosphere within Smit Salvage is informal and is characterized by teamwork, professionalism and entrepreneurship. You are up for a challenge, you like a dynamic international maritime working environment.
As emergency responses to vessels are unplanned, the role requires flexibility and willingness to work standby operations duty 1 week every 4 weeks.
Your responsibilities as a project coordinator
- Provide support during mobilization, execution and demobilization of salvage projects. This includes, but is not limited to, mobilization of equipment, travel arrangements for team members and organizing visas.
- In close cooperation with the project Shore Coordinator, you will manage the return logistics of the salvage equipment and the financial completion of the project (supported by the finance department) by reporting on costs to the customer and Smit management.
- Ensure good communication with project crew and personnel.
- Provide operation support to the commercial department during the initial emergency response stage of a salvage opportunity.
- Provide administrative and logistical support for the equipment stored in the Cape Town warehouse.
- Coordination, booking and planning of necessary training for team members in the Cape Town office.
- Set-up and coordinate conference calls between project site and office on a regular basis to ensure all parties involved are informed.
- Update the Project SharePoint.
- Manage (key) subcontractors and suppliers. This includes, but is not limited to, coordination of evaluation meetings at the end of a project.
- Be able to issue PO’s and invoices, according to the company policy and accounting system, in support of Cape Town warehouse general purchases as well as on projects.
- Identifying new subcontractors or suppliers and coordinating their service agreements with accurate administration.
- Ensure, advise and coordinate various activities related to SHEQ procedures and requirements.
Your qualities
You can make your mark as project coordinator if you:
- Have more than 5 years of working experience, preferably within the international maritime and/or offshore industry. Shipping agency or logistic experience has a preference.
- Are hands-on, flexible, creative, proactive and a team player.
- Are able to work independently as well as within a team.
- Are willing to work on weekends and public holidays, with overtime and allowances compensated.
- Knowledge of the applicable Occupational Health & Safety rules.
- Have sound knowledge of Word and Excel.
- Have an excellent mastery of both written and spoken English.
- You are based in South Africa, preferably Cape Town region.

- Your team: As a project coordinator you will work for SMIT Salvage Cape Town. You will work together with other Cape Town-based salvage colleagues and of course your colleagues in the other offices around the world.
- Where you will work: You will work at our office in Cape Town and occasionally on projects.
- Full-time: The project coordinator position is full-time (40 hours per week).
