Job Description
The HV Battery Management System (BMS) Systems Engineer technically defines, architects, and steers the implementation of high-voltage BMS for automotive and stationary applications. This role merges the responsibilities of a System Architect and a Software System Designer (SW-SD). The architect will translate customer needs into clear system, hardware, software, safety, and validation requirements, ensuring the final product meets customer, project, and regulatory targets. This highly technical role requires significant real-world experience with HV BMS deployments.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Architecture & Design: Own and steer the complete HV BMS architecture, including controllers, system functions, software, hardware interfaces, and safety mechanisms. Develop scalable architectural views and lead technical decisions for all BMS components.
- Requirements Engineering: Analyze customer requirements to derive and decompose system, hardware, software, safety, and validation specifications. Translate needs into actionable work packages and maintain full traceability.
- Software & Control Architecture: Define the embedded control architecture for BMS software (including AUTOSAR), covering application/basic software, drivers, diagnostics, and communication. Guide software partitioning, resource management, and implementation concepts to ensure scalability and reuse.
- Core Function Steering: Lead the architectural implementation of key BMS functions such as State of Charge/Health/Power (SoX), cell balancing, monitoring, contactor control, thermal management, and fault diagnostics.
- Safety & Compliance: Drive the integration of functional safety (ISO 26262) and cybersecurity standards into the system architecture. Support safety analyses (FMEA, FTA) and ensure compliance with all relevant industry and customer-specific regulations.
- Technical Leadership & Integration: Provide expert guidance to hardware, software, and validation teams. Define and review system interfaces and support the integration of the BMS into battery packs, vehicles, and test environments.
- Problem Resolution: Lead complex technical debugging, root cause analysis, and issue resolution across all system domains, from development to field incidents.
- Customer & Stakeholder Interface: Serve as the senior technical contact for customers, leading technical discussions, design reviews, and workshops. Clearly communicate complex topics to all stakeholders to ensure project alignment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, or a related Engineering field. A Master's degree is preferred.
- 10+ years in embedded control systems (e.g., automotive electronics, electrified powertrain, energy storage) with substantial direct experience in High Voltage Battery Management Systems (HV BMS).
- Deployment Expertise: Must have proven, real-world experience deploying HV BMS products in automotive, commercial vehicle, or Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) applications. Experience must cover the full development lifecycle, from concept and architecture to validation, launch, and field support.
- HV BMS Domain: Deep knowledge of HV BMS architecture, including master/slave controllers, cell supervision circuits (AFEs), state estimation algorithms (SOC, SOH, SOP), cell balancing, contactor control, pre-charge concepts, and HV safety strategies (isolation, interlock).
- Embedded Systems: Proficiency in Embedded C, AUTOSAR architecture (MCAL, diagnostics, communication stacks), and embedded communication interfaces (CAN, LIN, SPI, Ethernet). Familiarity with UDS diagnostics, calibration concepts, and runtime analysis.
- Hardware & Systems: Understanding of analog, digital, and power electronics for BMS controllers, including sensing circuits, power supplies, and high-voltage design considerations (creepage, clearance).
- Processes & Standards: Strong working knowledge of automotive development processes (ASPICE) and safety/security standards, including ISO 26262 (Functional Safety), ISO/SAE 21434 (Cybersecurity), and failure analysis methods (FMEA, FTA).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Electrical, Computer, or a related Engineering field.
- Production program experience with automotive HV BMS or stationary BESS systems.
- Knowledge of model-based development (MBD) for SoX functions.
- Lab experience using oscilloscopes, CAN/Ethernet tools, and HIL systems for system debugging and validation.
- Experience with multi-pack or scalable BMS architectures.
Professional Competencies
- Strong technical leadership and systems-thinking mindset.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with global teams and interfacing with customers.
- Proactive problem-solving and hands-on debugging abilities.
- A strong commitment to safety and quality in system design.
