Job Description

The simulation engineer works within the system engineering group, helping our internal product development teams to derive requirements for current and future power-related components and subsystems.  You will support engineering groups with detailed analysis of component behavior under realistic engine and vehicle scenarios, helping them understand underlying physics and cause-effect relationships.

Based on a profound expertise in Finite Element Method simulation (FEM), physics, static and dynamic mechanics, thermodynamics, internal combustion, heat transfer and powertrain components, you will manage and follow up on development activities for new projects to ensure internal and external customer requirements are met according to their specifications.

As an FEA simulation engineer you are responsible for developing Finite Element models to perform numerical simulations for multiple components, providing insights for product development, innovation, and problem-solving. This includes providing deep analysis of simulation results, product-relevant interpretation, and correlation to physical tests to validate the FE models. You must be capable of professionally communicating simulation results to stakeholders with varying technical expertise, ensuring projects are executed on-time and on-spec. Additionally, it is important that you work hand by hand with our development departments and get deep into the products and system know how, in order to have the necessary background to assist and interpretate the Simulation Results.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • FEA Simulation & Execution:
    • Manage and execute FEA projects for various components using state-of-the-art simulation software and methods.
    • Develop discrete physical models using Finite Element methods, translating technical specifications into accurate boundary conditions, contacts, and constraints.
    • Perform a wide range of simulations, including linear/nonlinear, static/dynamic (modal, harmonic), and explicit/implicit analyses to investigate phenomena like heat transfer, fatigue, and material behavior.
  • Analysis, Interpretation, Validation & Reporting:
    • Conduct in-depth analysis and interpretation of simulation results to understand underlying physics and provide insightful recommendations to design and product engineering teams.
    • Validate FE models by correlating simulation data with physical test results.
    • Create clear, concise, and complete technical reports and present findings professionally to stakeholders with diverse levels of technical expertise.
  • Project & Team Contribution:
    • Actively support project development by meeting specific requirements and deadlines, proposing design improvements, and driving data-driven development activities.
    • Collaborate effectively as part of an international, multidisciplinary team.
    • Promote a safe work environment by ensuring compliance with safety regulations (ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001) and reporting any unsafe conditions.
  • Technical Domain & Innovation:
    • Work hand-in-hand with development departments to gain deep product and system knowledge, ensuring simulation results are practical and relevant.
    • Apply knowledge of manufacturing processes, durability/lifetime analysis, and the automotive development lifecycle (A-sample to SOP) to enhance simulation accuracy and product reliability.
    • Utilize programming skills (e.g., Python scripting) to automate workflows and develop data-driven processes to make simulations more efficient.

Qualifications

  • Education: Related Engineering degree, e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Physics, etc. (Desirable Master or PhD).
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in FEA/CAE, demonstrable with references. International experience (Desirable).
  • Language: Advanced proficiency in English (written and spoken).  (Desirable: German)

Technical Skills:

  • Core Knowledge: Strong foundation in solid mechanics, Finite Element Method (FEM) theory, and analytical skills for verifying basic mechanical problems.
  • Analysis & Modeling: Expertise in performing static & dynamic analysis, materials modeling, and post-processing simulation data.
  • Requirements Engineering: Proven ability to translate customer needs and technical specifications into CAE model requirements
  • CAE Software: Proficiency with specialized CAE solvers like Abaqus, Ansys Mechanical, or Nastran.
  • Domain Knowledge: Understanding of automotive development processes (A-sample to SOP), manufacturing processes, and physical validation techniques.
  • Advanced Analysis: Knowledge of fatigue/lifetime estimation and plastic injection molding simulation.
  • Meshing & CAD: Expertise in model discretization with meshing tools (e.g., Ansys Meshing, Hypermesh) and experience with CAD software (e.g., NX, CATIA, SolidWorks).
  • Data & Automation: Experience with optimization tools (e.g., OptiStruct, Ansys OptiSLang), data visualization apps (e.g., Power BI), and scripting (Python, shell/batch).
