Master Thesis Internship - Mechanical Engineering: Multi-Physics Simulation of Stacks for E-Motors

  • Intern
  • Legal Entity: Bosch Transmission Technology B.V.

Company Description

Bosch Transmission Technology in Tilburg is part of the Bosch Group, a leading global supplier of technology and services, with approximately 395,000 employees worldwide. Bosch is the number one supplier in the automotive industry globally and is investing in electrification and fuel cell technologies.

Our Engineering for Innovation and New Technology Department provides research and development support for innovative products such as stacks for E-Motors, electrolyzers, air foil bearings, and pushbelts. We focus on data-driven development for multiple products in both industrial and automotive sectors. Our approach covers the entire digital lifecycle, from requirements gathering to data ingestion, analysis, and dashboarding, tailored to specific use cases for different products.

Currently we have a research internship position for a student studying in the field of Mechanical Engineering or physics with affinity in multi physics and data science.

You would come to work with the specialists in numerical simulation spanning several disciplines like Material, Data Science, Electromagnetism, Noise and Vibration, Dynamics, Thermodynamics and many more and can expect the following:

Job Description

In this topic you would do a research study by investigating and exploring the Multi Objective Optimization (MOO) based on Multiphysics simulation on system level (E-stack level).

You would be using a combination of mathematical physics-based models and get supported by the experts in the field.

You would perform sensitivity studies, develop and upgrade the simulation tool chain, generate cause-effect relations and data for surrogate models (e.g. AI, ML, …).

This research will serve as proof of concept for MOO and parametric studies.

You can think of the research questions like:

  • Which types, layouts, or dimensions of machines will get the greatest benefits from specific design and manufacturing process? [Design]
  • What are the operating conditions in which the greatest benefits are attained in terms of set points, torque, speed, power, etc.? [Set points]
  • Which attributes are mostly affected in terms of performance (efficiency, peak power, strength, noise and vibration)? [KPI’s]

Qualifications

Need to have's (required):

  • You are a Master student currently studying Mechanical Engineering and have affinity and interest in Multiphysics Simulation and AI;
  • You have knowledge in MATLAB;
  • You are familiar with COMSOL Multiphysics;
  • You are proactive, research and goal oriented;
  • You are innovative and can think in solutions;
  • You are fluent in English, spoken and written.

Nice to have's (not required, but beneficial):

  • You are a natural networker;
  • You are familiar with User Interfaces (UI’s and GUI’s);
  • You are structured, responsible, and a great team player.

Additional Information

This internship will give you the opportunity to experience all aspects of optimization in modeling and simulation in a global corporate environment. You will work in a dynamic department with an open culture and friendly colleagues.

On top of that you will have the hybrid flexibility to work partially from home.

We offer:

  • Versatile internship within a challenging working environment of an international organization;
  • Internship allowance;
  • Holidays.

We are open to new initiatives and ideas that you bring with you. In addition, there is plenty of opportunity to work independently on your research (but of course we are happy to think along with you). In general, this is an internship with many possibilities and a collaboration with the best colleagues!

Application process:

  • Phone introduction to a Corporate Recruiter;
  • First introduction with your future manager and colleague;
  • Offer and contract with Bosch.
