Job Description

The Director Engineering, Audio Systems directs and coordinates activities of the Audio engineering departments including:

  • Responsibility for electroacoustic technology and audio electronics across the entire BU portfolio including speakers, microphones, headsets, amplifiers, signal processors and related equipment
  • Perform required R&D in support of new product development and maintenance activities
  • Accelerate and manage new product development to enable faster and broader penetration of the market. 
  • Provide leadership and work direction to the Engineering Managers and staff to ensure that Bosch establishes and maintains required technological leadership in support of market requirements.
  • Accountable for cost and schedule execution for projects within portfolio
  • Understand and deploy Bosch development processes and standards across Engineering departments
  • Assure effective interface with other Bosch organizations. 
  • Identify opportunities to provide superior solutions. 
  • Envision where technology is headed and create a plan to arrive there first 
  • Manage the technology portfolio for multiple business lines. 
  • Direct Reports: 5 Managers, 2 Directors, Team size: 70, Location of Position: Straubing Germany and other key Location: Burnsville, Minnesota, USA

Specific Responsibilities:

Engineering and Product Development

  • Supports all engineering and product development related activities for assigned product areas.
  • Thinks creatively alongside product management to identify technologies and solutions to serve customer needs.
  • Interfaces with product management in the new product development process from conception through market launch using Bosch PEP stage-gate process. 
  • Confers with management, production, and logistics staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.
  • Directs department activities to design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures.
  • Integrates design team with supply chain and manufacturing.
  • Builds the technical capabilities, knowledge, and skills of this engineering function to be recognized and valued as a source of competitive advantage by customers and other functions within the organization. 

 

Manage Budget and Operating Costs

  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Conceives, understands and defends the financial justification of new product development programs such as cost estimation, ROI, make-vs-buy, and capital equipment justification.
  • Fosters outside relationships with technology providers and vendors.
  • Works closely with Business Line and Product Managers to determine R&D priorities and initiatives.

 

Management Activities

  • Supervises, coordinates and reviews the work of a staff of engineers and technicians.
  • Estimates personnel needs, recruits and develops top talent.
  • Helps define and assign work duties.
  • Analyzes technology trends, and market demand to plan projects.
  • Constantly seeks to build world class Engineering Centers of Excellence.
  • Maps critical skills necessary to achieve world-class status. 

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Physics, with a minimum of 10 years design experience, and 5 years management experience or equivalent blend of education and experience.
  • Solid working knowledge of acoustics and electroacoustic product design and professional audio systems development including hardware, firmware and software design
  • Specific knowledge of professional audio speaker design and construction is preferred
  • Specific knowledge of transducer design is preferred
  • Specific knowledge of professional audio product design including amplifiers and signal processors is preferred
  • Proven track record of employing rapid product development techniques to optimize project implementation timelines within budget. 
  • Knowledge and successful use of lean principles, manufacturing engineering, and engineering process control methods and techniques.
  • Ability to identify and assign resources toward specific product initiatives.
  • Outstanding team leadership skills.
  • Exceptional ability to present and communicate to customers/prospects.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial and managerial accounting principles as related to product development and engineering initiatives.
  • Proven experience in personnel supervision and budget preparation and management.
  • Willing to travel between company locations and to and customer locations, including international
