Job Description

Primary Purpose & Value of the Department and Position:

As a member of the BkueScope Coated Products Maintenance and Engineering team, the PLC/Controls Engineer directs the design and installation of new or replacement robotic and automation equipment, develops standards for reliability and guidelines for engineering and maintenance activities on said equipment, ensures engineering drawings and technical information are kept up to date for equipment identified. The incumbent is also responsible for the daily maintenance activities on equipment and systems within the Controls/PLC Engineer responsibility. The Controls /PLC Engineer may also be tasked with supporting other maintenance activities during breakdowns, line

shuts, annual shuts, or when the need arises.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as project leader on new equipment procurement, installation, commissioning, and training.

  • Lead or assist in feasibility studies for new robotic or automation equipment.

  • Direct the maintenance, reliability, and performance activities to ensure equipment and systems meet their required targets.

  • Train operations and maintenance users in new systems operations and maintenance activities.

  • Research and investigate new technologies to decrease BCP costs, increase effectiveness, and maintain business viability.

  • Assist other maintenance activities across BCP as required.

  • Ensure all systems have secure protection protocols consistent with BlueScope standards.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • 2-5 years of experience of electrical and electronic systems within an industrial manufacturing setting.
  • 1-3 years of experience with Allen Bradley/Rockwell or similar programs

 

Preferred:

  • 5 + years’ automation/robotics/mechatronics project work.

  • Heavy Manufacturing experience in the implementation of automation projects with successful cost and performance outcomes.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Ability:

  • Ability to effectively manage projects from conception to completion. Include budgeting, design, manpower allocation, timeline development, documentation, and technical instruction.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

  • Ability to analyze and solve problems through the application of principles of mechanics, electricity, and fluid dynamics to machines and equipment.

  • Ability to understand the operation of moderately complex tools, machines, and systems

  • Ability to operate and understand a variety of computer applications and systems such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and SAP.

  • Working knowledge of modem OT security, networking, and integration technologies.

Other requirements:

  • Have a safe work history and ethics, and perform safety, health, and environmental inspections.

  • Ability to work extended hours.

  • Ability to travel at limited notice, and for extended periods with notice.

  • Understand time management to follow production plans and schedules
