PRIMARY FUNCTION Inspects, tests, dismantles and makes electrical and mechanical repairs to all types of electrical control and drive equipment and combustion and instrumentation devices in the facility by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Inspects and makes tests, consults wiring diagrams and determines material or replacement needs according to specifications.
  • Plans general working procedure, determining tools and material requirements for equipment repairs.
  • Locates source of trouble in any type of electrical equipment or apparatus by tracing and testing circuits and inspecting for mechanical failure.
  • Dismantles, inspects, repairs, replaces or adjusts faulty parts and wiring on electrical equipment, switches, circuit breakers, transformers, hydraulic and magnetic brakes, panel boards, resistance banks, motors, starters and electronic equipment.
  • Rewires, insulates, paints and reassembles equipment, completing adjustments required to obtain proper operating characteristics.
  • Makes mechanical repairs to equipment being serviced, including the replacement, repair and installation of sleeve and anti-friction bearings, gears, shafts, pins, etc.
  • Fabricates parts, as required, using shop machines and hand tools.
  • Works in assigned areas and, as called upon, services and repairs equipment in shop.
  • Obtains working knowledge necessary for troubleshooting and servicing all PLC and control equipment associated with the facility.
  • Performs a regular routine of test and calibrations, set ups and adjustments on any type of combustion and instrumentation equipment.
  • Removes, overhauls and replaces solenoid valves, sample pumps and dryers.
  • Analyzes all types of instrumentation drawings, combustion safety drawings, systems piping and wiring diagrams, charts and graphs.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:  High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) plus 2 years of technical school in electrical or electronic technology; and 3 to 5 years’ experience as an electrical technician on a continuous metal processing line with equipment similar to a galvanizing and/or paint coating line; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Must possess basic knowledge in process computer controlled equipment and plant maintenance knowledge in electricity, electronics, instrumentation, combustion, steam and heat.

Journeyman Level 1 Qualifications:

• High school diploma required.

• Basic understanding of electricity.

• Electrician license may be required.

• 1-3 years of related experience, or 0 years with specialized training and/or certification, preferred.

• Ability to identify all personal protective equipment (PPE) required to perform repairs.

• Understanding of electricity and knowledge of safe practices while working.

• Ability to bend and install a new conduit run, observing all National Electrical Code (NEC) codes.

• Knowledge of how to install required hangers and pull wire through conduit.

• Familiarity with the use of a multimeter and ability to check voltage and continuity.

• Understanding of the use of a Megger.

• Knowledge of the symbols for N.O. (normally open) and N.C. (normally closed) contacts and coils.

• Basic understanding of ladder logic.

• Demonstrated knowledge of lighting circuits and power sources on a line.

• Ability to identify various field devices visually and on prints, and explain how they work and why they are used.

• Ability to inspect, repair, install, and maintain electrical systems, machinery, and equipment.

• Knowledge of safety codes and ability to ensure all work meets these codes and is properly inspected.

• Proficiency in using a variety of tools and equipment, including power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment.

• Ability to work under moderate supervision and attain full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.

 

Journeyman Level 2 Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Electrician's license from the state (preferred).

• Minimum of two years of journeyman level 1.

• Associate’s degree, or additional training &/or certifications preferred.

• Knowledge of NEC code and ability to determine conduit and wire sizes for a given conduit run.

• Ability to determine the enclosure, panel front layout, and wiring for a control panel.

• Knowledge of various test equipment and ability to demonstrate how to use them.

• Experience logging on to at least two different operator systems (Automax, Allen Bradley).

• Ability to find variables in programs and determine whether they are on or off.

• Understanding of basic operation of variable speed DC and AC drives.

• Ability to identify field devices visually and from prints, and match devices with their associated symbols.

• Experience testing and troubleshooting field devices.

• Experience inspecting, repairing, installing, and maintaining electrical systems, machinery, and equipment.

• Knowledge of safety codes and ability to ensure all work meets required safety standards.

• Proficiency in a variety of tools and equipment, including power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment.

 

Journeyman Level 3 Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Electrician License required.

• 3 months of skill level 2 experience.

• 7+ years of related experience preferred.

• Proficiency in using a copy of the most current National Electrical Code to answer general questions, including citing relevant articles and sections.

• Ability to troubleshoot and repair variable speed drive controllers.

• Good working knowledge of at least two different PLC systems, including the ability to troubleshoot problems and write new code.

• Proficiency in tracing and disconnecting all power sources.

• Proficiency in the use of power analysis and multi-channel recording equipment.

• Understanding of and ability to work with Temp/P.I.D. Controls.

• Ability to work on complex problems and exceptions without direct supervision.

• Wide and comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of Journeyman levels 2 & 3.

Additional Information

Pay Range: 

Journeyman 2= $40.55/Hr

Journeyman 3= $43.51/Hr
