Job Description

Summary:

The Production Supervisor is responsible for all daily functions and manpower needs for all areas as a backup to the Personnel Relations Supervisor. These areas will include Paint-line, Slitter, Embosser, and building 8 docks; also assist the Shipping Supervisor when needed.  The Production Supervisor is also responsible for directing their team regarding all jobs being performed in each area, which materials and products are necessary and assisting with quality inspection.  They help ensure all product gets to the customer by the date needed in prime, undamaged condition.  The appropriate candidate will possess strong leadership skills and will be expected to perform work using software as well as filling out various reports in writing, and additionally assist in the safe and accurate performance of the staff as necessary.  The Production Supervisor will be required to work directly with the union and familiarize themselves with union policies, the CBA and grievance process, understand bid job placement, training, and scheduling in a backup capacity.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:           

1.      Prepare work orders and paperwork for production areas efficiently and accurately.

2.      Perform computer work to enter information necessary for reports as well as viewing the software for job order and materials review.

3.      Responsible for preparing reports and conducting studies that are presented to management.

4.      The position will primarily work varying shifts; however, there will opportunities to gain steady shifts.

5.      Must communicate continuously with corporate and Customer Experience Representatives.

6.      Responsible for overseeing the proper storage of materials received and finished goods.

7.      Responsible for tracking on-time and quality production.

8.      Responsible for overseeing and signing off on all on-the-job training as needed with line personnel which may occur with new employees or tenured employees.

9.      Will ensure that proper reporting and record-keeping is conducted which includes data entry.

10.  Responsible for maintaining adequate workload for all production personnel.

11.  Expected to be a facilitator and lead process improvement teams to improve quality, production, safety, or efficiencies.

12.  Will participate in any training the company provides and believes is necessary to better the  employee. This may include management training at locations other than the plant. 

13.  Will participate in monthly on-site safety meetings, or any team meetings coordinated by leadership, and remind staff of such meetings as well.

 

Environmental Impacts:

It is the responsibility of all employees to avoid environmental impacts including but not limited to the release of gas or toxic vapors, solvents, paints, grease, oils, and various other chemicals into the environment. Caution needs to be taken to avoid spills. If a spill occurs Spill Response log and report procedures must be followed. In addition, all employees are responsible to recycle all recyclable materials including but not limited to paper, plastics, cardboard, ink cartridges, etc. Good housekeeping practices are essential as a preventative measure.

Physical Demands:

Employee must be physically present to perform most of the tasks of this position.  While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, bend, stoop, use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls, reach with arms and hands, climb and balance.  The employee is required to lift a minimum of 60 pounds.  Specific vision abilities include close-up and distant vision, color variation vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. 

Work Environment:

The employee may be required to enter areas that are near moving mechanical parts, with occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, and extreme cold or heat. The noise level in the work environment is considered moderate and does require the use of hearing protection. The employee will be required to utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when accessing certain manufacturing areas.

Safety Responsibilities:

Before initiating work at BlueScope, the employee is required to read and understand the position’s Job Safety Analysis.  The employee must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and perform tasks in a manner consistent with BlueScope safety training, Employee Manual and OSHA regulations.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent is required.  A minimum of five years industrial and/or supervisory work experience preferred.  Union experience will receive special consideration.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend documents including but not limited to policy manuals, safety rules/programs, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and simple correspondence. In addition, the ability to communicate information effectively one-on-one, in small group situations and settings is required.   

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions, weights, and percentages.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to perform work instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form a must.  In addition, the ability to solve problems, which involve multiple variables in a standard situation, is required.

Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Employee is required be trained on overhead crane operation, safe operation of forklift, and use of power tools. Employee should also possess basic computer (data entry) skills and capable of recognizing metal defects.
