Job Description

The Health Safety & Environment Manager provides technical knowledge and professional advice and direction to Plant Managers to ensure implementation of a robust HSE system across facility.  The Manager fosters an inclusive safe workplace culture that values and invites a diversity of people and perspectives. They provide safe and healthy working conditions to enhance wellbeing and prevent work related injuries, ill health, harm to the environment and our community. The HSE Manager applies practice, effective controls to eliminate hazards and reduce risks associated in the workplace as well as the efficient use of resources, preventing pollution and reducing the negative environmental impacts of our operations.

Primary duties include:

  • Coordinate safety compliance activities with the Facility Management team to reduce risk for employees, contractors, and visitors
  • Develop, implement and maintain an effective employee HSE training program
  • Assist Plant Manager with development and implementation of site HSE strategy
  • Monitor performance against established expectations and provide regular feedback
  • Coordinate environmental compliance activities with the Facility Management team to reduce environmental impact and liabilities
  • Maintain internal and regulatory reporting responsibilities including data collection and submittal of timely and accurate reports
  • Provide direction and oversight of facility’s PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) selection, distribution, use, care and maintenance
  • Facilitate roll-out of HSE programs within the facility
  • Procure and maintain all environmental permits and authorizations required for facility operations
  • Assist in oversight and management of employees under our Worker’s Compensation program

Necessary skills include:

  • An understanding of leading and lagging indicators
  • Ability to mine accumulated data for trends and adjust HSE strategy accordingly
  • Ability to maximize utilization of software applications to drive HSE improvement
  • PC competence (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Organization and time management
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Extensive coaching, mentoring and influencing skills
  • Understanding of OSHA and EPA compliance standards and how to research them
  • Planning, strategic thinking
  • Courage of convictions
  • Driver of innovation and change and highly-adaptable
  • Builds collaborative relationships

Qualifications

Minimum:       

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational, Health and Safety, Engineering degree, or another related field or professional HSE certification.  6 years of experience in Occupational Health and Safety is acceptable in lieu of degree.
  • 2 years of experience in heavy industrial environment

Preferred:       

  • ASP, CSP, Etc. certifications
  • Environmental technical knowledge
  • Demonstrated experience in building an effective HSE program
  • Project Management experience
  • Industrial manufacturing experience
  • 2 years of management or supervisory experience
