Job Description

The Quality Assurance Specialist is responsible for pre-shipment batch testing of raw materials. Maintains traceable of Quality Assurance records. The Quality Assurance Specialist verifies the accuracy of, and calibrates all of the instruments used to evaluate product quality. The Quality Assurance Specialist conducts routine audits to ensure compliance to the Quality/Environmental Management System. Other duties include investigations and problem solving on all supplier related rejected material.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:              

1.      Responsible for control of paint manufacturers PDS, C of A’s and color standards. This includes entering such information into Oracle for QC work order documentation, Coater cards and QC cards.

2.      Responsible for pre-shipment certification (i.e. verification testing) of all incoming batches of raw material to Metal Coaters of Ohio. (MCO)

3.      Maintains traceable Quality Assurance Records (i.e. product test records, inspection records, process control records, calibration records, HFI’s etc.) which are necessary for investigating process and/or product non-conformities. These records are also the foundation to Quality and Environmental Management System.

4.      Responsible for all line rejections due to supplier nonconforming material. (i.e. Steel and Paint suppliers). Duties are to complete investigations related to such issues and work closely with suppliers to resolve.

5.      Performs coil inspection on inspect line as needed for disposition of nonconforming material.

6.      Utilizes various instruments and measuring devices (color & gloss meters, X-ray portaspec, thickness measurement devices, etc.) to perform special product or process testing as required.

7.      At the discretion of the Manufacturing Manager and the Quality Manager, and after the Backup Operator has been exhausted as a possibility to perform the duties of the Quality Control Technician, either the Quality Assurance Specialist or the Team Leader will perform all of the functions of the Quality Control Technician when called upon due to vacation, illness or other reason for absence.

8.      Performs audits of the Quality and Environmental Management System to ensure MCO compliance to the system.

9.      Assists with and verifies the implementation of corrective actions necessary to correct audit non-compliances that are encountered during Quality System audits.

10.   Responsible for understanding and complying with the fundamental principles associated with the Quality and Environmental Management System in place at MCO.

11.   Communicates daily with internal personnel from Maintenance, Materials Control, Production, Sales and Shipping to resolve product quality problems and assist with meeting company goals.

12.    Any and all other duties assigned by Quality Manager.

Qualifications

Environmental Impacts:

It is the responsibility of all employees to avoid environmental impacts including but not limited to the release of gas or toxic vapors, solvents, paints, grease, oils and various other chemicals into the environment.  Caution needs to be taken to avoid spills.  If a spill occurs Metal Coaters, (Spill Response, Log and Report procedures) must be followed.  In addition, all employees are responsible to recycle all recyclable materials including but not limited to paper, plastics, cardboard, ink cartridges, etc.  Good housekeeping practices are essential as a preventative measure.

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and five years of related work experience is preferred.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend documents including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and simple correspondence. Also, the ability to communicate information (in small group situations) to other employees.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions, percentages, area, circumference, volume and densities.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to perform work instructions that are furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Also, the ability to solve problems which involve multiple variables in a standard situation.

Other Skills & Abilities:

Incumbent is required to possess an understanding of metal and paint characteristics. Personal computer skills are preferred.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance. Specific vision abilities include close-up and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally performs near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold or heat. The noise level in the work environment is considered moderate.

Safety Responsibilities:

Before initiating work at Metal Coaters, the employee is required to read and understand the position’s Job Safety Analysis.  The employee must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and perform tasks in a manner consistent with NCI and Metal Coaters safety training, NCI Employee Manual and OSHA regulations.
