Job Description

The Automation Engineer I:

  • Provides automation, electrical, and safety support for achievement of team goals as specified by management
  • Works with Automation Engineer II (AEII) to specify, implement, and provide technical support for electrical components, automation systems, and robotics for new installs
  • Reviews electrical, programmable logic controller (PLC), automation systems, and robotics for the AEII
  •  Assists HSE Manager with safety and OSHA compliance in regard to automated equipment, PLC’s, and equipment controls
  • Assists in evaluating manufacturing capabilities and developing corrective action for problems relating to production and quality of materials and recommends revisions of operation, alterations in equipment layout and other changes to facilitate production processes or improve standards
  • Provides assistance for design of automated equipment for a wide variety of manufacturing processes including; process automation, robotic integration, and elimination of safety hazards

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist AEII with electrical and automation knowledge
  • Write, modify, analyze and troubleshoot electrical controls including, but not limited to, PLC’s, Human Machine Interface’s (HMI), system controllers, drives, servo motors, and other components for a standard electrical system
  • Review and specify new electrical components for use in new processes
  • Review processes and provide clear and concise benefits for automation
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and perform complex system tests
  • Review, repair and redesign legacy code
  • Assist project managers with capital budget approvals to ensure projects are completed successfully and on time
  • Work with AEII to design controls, develop automation, write sequence of operation documentation, and review proposals for project suitability
  • Provide AEII with ensuring compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulations regarding the facility
  • Provide technical knowledge of equipment and processes to address possible safety or environmental issues
  • Write work instructions, job safety analyses, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) instructions for facility equipment
  • Assist AEII with ensuring equipment brought into, installed, and used in the facility complies with OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and company safety standards, and any other standards applicable to equipment being installed in our facilities

Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology or 4 additional years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • 2 years of Automation and Robotic Engineering experience
  • Successful project management experience
  • Experience directly leading projects totaling more than $250,000 per year
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing processes and capabilities
  • AutoCAD and drafting background
  • Knowledge of PLC’s, equipment controllers, electrical components, robotics and HMI’s
    • Well versed in writing, troubleshooting and modifying PLC Code
    • Expierence in industrial electricty and safety
    • Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO), electrical arc flash, use of PLC’s and sensors for safe operations of equipment
  • Knowledge of electrical, automation and robotic codes including OSHA, ASME, NEC, NFPA and others

Preferred Education & Experience Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Automation Engineering
  • 3+ years of Manufacturing Engineering experience
  • Experience in Lean manufacturing techniques
  • Background in equipment design &/or re-design
  • Experience with maintenance management software
