Summary:

The Material Handler I is responsible for safely handling and staging material for production at the paint line. The Material Handler I is also responsible for preparing necessary materials for packaging of finished coils.  In addition to those primary functions, the Material Handler- Exit ensures that finished coils are properly identified with a coil identification ticket and are stored properly in a designated location.

 

Job Description

  • Responsible for placing core on the arbor; need to ensure they have proper cores / materials per customer requirements.  
  • Responsible for removing head and tail scrap from the finished good coil, using proper methods as identified by customer requirements.  
  • Responsible for following instructions on Work Orders to ensure we are meeting customer requirements (cores or no cores).  
  • After scrap has been removed from coil, ensure they are banded to specification before handing off to final packaging.  
  • Responsible for preparing materials to be used for packaging and shipping of finished coils.
  • Responsible for packaging finished coils in a safe manner and moving those coils to a designated location for finished goods.
  • Responsible for verifying that finished goods (coils) are properly identified with an identification ticket prior to moving them to a storage area.
  • Responsible for verifying that finished goods (coils) are not damaged or visibly non-conforming prior to moving them to a designated storage area.
  • Responsible for quarantining non-conforming material (using the HFI process) and notifying Quality Control when non-conforming conditions exist.
  • Responsible for assisting coaters during all roll changes and during all paint changes.  Paint change exception being top head color change only.
  • Responsible for assisting with repairs in the event of a strip break.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with the fundamental principles associated with the Quality and Environmental Management System in place at Metal Coaters of Georgia, Inc.
  • Communicates daily with internal personnel from Production and Quality Control in order to assist in resolving problems and achieving company goals.
  • Responsible for watching strip, notifying quality and/or Exit Operator of any defects.

Environmental Impacts of this Position

The Material Handler I has a responsibility of avoiding environmental impacts such as; the release of: oils, grease from forklifts and cranes, solvents, paints, and various other chemicals by accidental puncture, while performing daily duties.  The Material Handler-1 also has the responsibility to recycle all recyclable materials such as: paper, plastics, cardboard, ink cartridges etc.  Good housekeeping practices are essential as a preventative measure.  If a spill occurs, MCG-527 (Spill Response, Log and Report Procedure) must be followed.

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED).

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend documents including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and simple correspondence. Also, the ability to communicate information (in small group situations) to other employees.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions, percentages, area, circumference, volume and densities. Also, the ability to apply the concepts of statistics and probability to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to perform work instructions that are furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Also, the ability to solve problems, which involve multiple variables in a standard situation.

Other Skills & Abilities:

PC Skills are preferable. Incumbent is required to drive a forklift, operate an overhead crane and use various power tools.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is frequently required to stand; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance. Specific vision abilities include close-up and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally performs near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold or heat. The noise level in the work environment is considered moderate.
