The Senior Accountant has primary responsibilities that are related to business performance and governance in Finance and Accounting for BlueScope Coated Products (BCP).  BCP is a newly acquired business in June of 2022 and the business is in process of integrating key accounting activities from the previous owner into BlueScope.  The Senior Accountant will be responsible for a successful transition of their assigned responsibilities, which will include working with the seller to gain detailed understanding and knowledge of key processes and controls.

Job Description

Business performance:  Driving business performance and improvement to optimize commercial and broader business outcomes. 

·        Drives the month-end close process, including preparing monthly journal entries, closing sub-ledger balances and reconciliation of account balances

·        Prepares accurate and timely financial reporting packages and can adequately respond to follow-up questions from the business unit level management, as well as the corporate teams in Australia

·        Primary contact with Corporate Accounting and for other BlueScope business units for monthly (and ad hoc) questions regarding financial statements, including required monthly variance analysis and reporting

·        Responsible for Fixed Asset accounting, including placing assets in service, depreciable lives in accordance with accounting policy, asset disposal, fixed asset reconciliations and required reporting

·        Reports on Capital investment expenditures, including management of capital requests and ensure proper analysis is completed per company policies and guidelines prior to commencement of project. 

·        Manages the Leases and accounting in the lease management system per IFRS requirements, this includes monthly journal entries and reconciliations and can produce reports as required.  Liaises closely with Corporate on lease accounting and required standards

·        Manages the Intercompany processes between BlueScope entities, including month-end balances and elimination entries and reporting processes.

·        Coordinates planning, budget and forecasting for assigned areas within timetables set and partners closely with the relevant business leaders

Strategy:  Providing financial leadership; driving strategic business direction, performance and opportunities

·        Understands the broader business strategy and how Finance and Accounting impacts and helps to drive the desired outcomes and targets set for the business

·        Assists in other strategic business projects as assigned by leadership

·        Assists in the integration efforts for the accounting and finance function as the business moves the function from the seller into BlueScope.  This will be an iterative process and will work closely with the seller, business partners and IT

Innovation:  Driving change and enabling innovation across the business and finance function to deliver value for external and internal customers.  Improved performance (Continuous Improvement) through change:

·        Assists in the implementation and advancement of data visualization tools for management

·        Proactively assesses new technologies and capabilities (External or within BlueScope) that does not reside with the company, providing suggestions for enhancement opportunities

·        Leverages the BlueScope network to find better ways to work and implement as practical

Governance:  Ensuring the integrity of information used for financial analysis, decision making and external reporting

·        Manages and maintains all aspects of internal controls within the responsible areas, including assisting in periodic management assessments to ensure controls are functioning as intended

·        Assists in all aspects of the annual and half year audits as it pertains to responsible areas of transactions, processes and balances, working with external audit as required

·        Participates in business unit level stewardship review providing variance analysis, supporting detail and insights related to assigned balances an relevant internal controls

·        Works closely with Internal Audits and is the main point of contact for audits that are focused on processes in responsible areas

·        Implementation of Technical Accounting policies, including documentation of technical workpapers and working closely with the Corporate accounting team

 

Capability:  Developing, attracting and empowering a highly capable and engaged BlueScope Finance team

·        Responsible for hiring, training, development, and evaluation of Accounting staff to ensure maximum performance and continuous improvement – including the assignment of job responsibilities.  This includes developing and maintaining procedures and training materials as needed/required.

·        Provides timely feedback and review to the staff, ensuring proper training, recruiting and completing bi-annual performance reviews

·        Collaborates with other functions and departments of Coated Products and other North America businesses where applicable to resolve issues efficiently and effectively – building effective teams and relationships

Qualifications

Minimum:

·        Bachelor of Science in Accounting

·        7 years of relevant work experience

·        Experience directly managing staff

Preferred:

·        CPA, MBA

·        Experience with a large ERP system, preferably Oracle

·        Power BI and data analytic capabilities
