Job Description

The National Manager of HSE provides expert health and safety leadership across the entire business ensuring delivery of agreed plans and goals with an overall focus on improving and then sustaining the health and safety of employees. In addition, the National Manager provides environmental leadership across the business and ensures environmental plans and goals are achieved. This role is a vital part of our Senior Leadership Team. 

The National Manager of HSE provides professional, expert advice and direction to company leadership and implements and maintains a robust HSE system for each business group.  The National Manager also influences behavior at all levels of the organization; challenging the status quo to drive continuous improvement on our goal towards Zero Harm.

  • Drive the continuous improvement of the health and safety culture across the company: lead the development and implementation of leadership, behavioral and engagement initiatives in order to deliver improved health and safety leadership, engagement, and behaviors and ultimately improved health and safety performance across the business.   This includes improved workers compensation outcomes.
  • Provide expert advice to leaders on all elements of the health, safety and environmental function: with the HSE team, ensure adequate specialist and technical advice is available to business leaders as required.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative and corporate requirements: lead the development and implementation of HSE policies, procedures, performance standards, management systems and guidelines ensuring compliance as required by legislation and corporate headquarters.  In doing so, exercise responsibility, authority, and accountability for Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Drive the health, safety and environment strategy for the company: Lead the development and implementation of the health, safety and environment strategy.  Work in conjunction with Business Presidents, senior management team, Plant Managers, HSE professionals and the VP OH&S BlueScope.  Represent BBNA on Corporate HSE Lead Team and act as liaison with corporate bringing global expectations into the business.
  • Develop the HSE team: Actively build on and improve the overall capability of the HSE team, ensuring adequate resources with the required capability exist within the business to fully deliver on HSE plans and goals.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or professional certification
  • 10 years of experience as an HSE professional, preferably in heavy industrial environment
  • 5 years of managerial or supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated experience in building an effective HSE program
  • Demonstrated success in improving health and safety performance in a complex organization
  • Demonstrated success in improving health and safety culture including safety leadership, behaviors and engagement
  • Experience working at senior leadership team level

Preferred:

  • CHMM, CSP, CIH certification
  • Certified CPR / 1st Aid
  • Certified 24-Hr HAZWOPER
