Job Description

The Plasma Operator (Machine Operator 2) is responsible for shift production requirements on two (2) MG-2000 air arc plasma cutting machines and support equipment encompassing the production, stacking and staging of structural frame components.  Requires use of judgment to plan, perform and make decisions as to the sequence of setups, operations and processes within the limitations of recognized or standard methods and procedures. Performance of this operation requires skills and knowledge on a variety of equipment.  While not inclusive, major items of equipment utilized are a Gantry crane, load and unload conveyors, submerged arc welding machines, cutting tables, dust collection systems and plasma cutting machines.  General support equipment includes the use of overhead cranes, rigging equipment, small torch cutting equipment, forklifts and a variety of small hand tools

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

In addition to complying with all safety, environmental, quality, and core policies, and contributing to the company’s Zero Harm and Zero Defects commitment, the following briefly describes primary activities (not all activities) that are regularly performed:

1.    Computer operation, downloading programs, generating programs from files and basic keyboarding skills.
2.    Maintain production report as required.
3.    Perform daily and routine maintenance.
4.    Dimensional inspection of product using standard measuring equipment.
5.    Move parts from cut table to staging area.
6.    Write beam and stack numbers on webs.
7.    Stack webs according to beam number.
8.    Ability to read and understand work instructions, assignments, drawings and reference material.
9.    Ability to apply basic math to calculate webs to a sheet of material and deduct daily usage on plate sheet turn-in.
10.    Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
11.    Capable of directing a 2-3 person crew.
12.    Capable of operating overhead cranes, using spreader bars, chains, slings and other various under hook devices.
13.    Able to operate and set up submerged arc weld operations.
14.    Ability to evaluate a variety of large equipment and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation.
15.    Performs typical operations for the fabrication of structural steel and support of the conrac department; i.e. forklift operation, tug operation, torch operation. Flange stacking.
16.    Follow all safety and operating instructions.
17.    Follow all quality methods and standards.
18.    Responsible for housekeeping in work area.
19.    All other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience Qualifications

  • High school diploma/equivalent or attain WorkKeys Assessment at certified job profile skill level
  • 6 months relevant experience

Preferred Education & Experience Qualifications

  • Certificate from technical school or 6 additional months of relevant experience and/or training in computerized numerically controlled (CNC) machine operations.
  • 1 year experience in computer-controlled machine operation.

Technical Skills & Competencies

  •  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and make decisions based on them
  • Capable of watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly
  • Ability to evaluate a variety of large equipment and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation of machine
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Mobile equipment and crane operation skills
  • Knowledge of raw materials sizes, production processes, quality control, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, general operation, repair, and maintenance
  • Good computer skills including a working knowledge of manufacturing software
  • Mathematics ability
  • Ability to read blueprints
