Job Description

The Internal Auditor Manager North America is central to delivering on Internal Audit’s vision to be:

  • valued and sought after by management to facilitate change and provide objective assurance in order to help improve the effectiveness of risk management, internal control and governance processes; and,
  • a valued development ground for future BlueScope leaders.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

This role is a senior management role, providing wide exposure across a range of commercial, operational and finance activities, including but not limited to the following:

Lead the North America Internal Audit team and maintain an effective audit presence throughout the Group. Provide clarity and direction, leading the team and working within the company in a way that generates widespread commitment and energy. Prepare reports and making presentations to management concerning the internal audit program. Take necessary action to assure individuals outside the function understand internal audit’s mandate, plans and activities.

Takes a leadership role in “Our Bond” and sets a personal example in all dealings with employees and other stakeholders.

Develop the team’s auditing tools and techniques, together with an understanding BSL business model, risks and operating environment. Help maintain a state-of-the-art audit function by leveraging this knowledge to develop and implement audit initiatives (organisation, process, and systems) in response to emerging business process changes and best practice techniques.

Provide functional leadership of the financial/operational audit process and ensure assigned audits are completed in line with expectations. Plan, review, approve, and manage progress against audit work plans, delegate appropriately, perform quality reviews, and provide flexible alternatives in order to manage multiple ongoing work tasks.

Control costs, staff resources and external service providers to complete audits on schedule and within budget, and which meet performance specifications and management expectations. Make scope and timing adjustments as necessary to increase the overall audit effectiveness.

Develop subordinates for future management roles through targeted recruitment, providing broad experiences, training and development. Foster an environment, which motivates a diverse team to fully use its capabilities in achieving, desired business results and attracts and retains the best people.

Establish an atmosphere of trust, honesty, and respect among team members that encourages communication and allows the team to effectively accomplish assigned tasks within defined cost, schedule, and quality assurance requirements in accordance with the BSL Bond.

Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience Qualifications

·         10+ years internal audit, risk management or other relevant experience obtained in a large/listed manufacturing environment.

·         Hold a relevant tertiary qualification and have undertaken further post-graduate studies and membership and qualifications from relevant professional bodies (eg. CA, CPA, CIA or North America equivalent)

·         Extensive financial technical knowledge and skills, and broad business skills including knowledge of better practices in financial and operational management

Preferred Education & Experience Qualifications

·         Experience working in similar roles in a major corporation with a preference for manufacturing background

Technical Skills & Competencies

·         Ability to think and act independently of senior management through the conduct of IA activities in a professional manner

·         Capacity to exercise professional judgement in the development, explanation and promulgation of IA opinions particularly in adverse contexts

·         Strong strategic planning skills, in particular, international compliance standards and financial systems development, and with respect to the interface of commercial, finance and reporting matters

·         Analytical skills, and an adaptable and constructive approach to problem solving

·         Extensive staff management skills including demonstrated ability to coach, train, develop and supervise others in this area

·         Develop and foster co-operative working relationships with Senior Management, including a proven ability to quickly establish trust with senior personnel

·         Effective interpersonal skills to communicate across all levels of the organisation

·         Ability to relate in a variety of Business Group cultures, and national cultures at all levels

·         Potential to take on more senior roles at a broader financial or commercial level

·         Strong skills in synthesising complex information into clear and simple form and solutions

·         Ability to work under pressure, juggle competing priorities and work to tight deadlines when required
