Laboratory Analyst
- Full-time
Job Description
BlueScope is an Australian-born global success story spanning 15 countries. Our team of over 16,500 people is our strength and we want our people to be safe, successful and well. We’re leaders and innovators in transforming steel into smart products and solutions that support society, today and in the future. We’re proud of brands, like COLORBOND ® steel that inspire and protect everything from hospitals to bridges and stadiums.
The Opportunity
Our Product Innovation & Technology team at our Port Kembla Innovation facility is looking for a Laboratory Analyst to join the team! Our Innovation team conducts exciting research involving the latest scientific tools and knowledge, developing new and improved products that enhance the beauty, functionality and performance of BlueScope’s range, including iconic products such as COLORBOND® steel.
This is an exciting time to join the team. With a range of breakthrough research programs underway, sophisticated analysis and evaluation of samples and prototypes is a critical driver of success. As a Laboratory Analyst, you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting and shaping this work through hands-on testing, technical analysis of results and deep evaluation of the ‘so what’ of the findings.
This is a permanent, full-time role, working Monday to Friday on day shift, based in Port Kembla. We offer flexibility with working hours and access to a range of wellbeing programs, including annual flu vaccinations.
What Will You Do?
In this role, your time will be split between hands-on laboratory testing and data analysis and interpretation. You will:
- utilise a variety of advanced analytical instruments and techniques to observe and quantify the effects of outdoor weathering on coatings systems used in BlueScope’s steel product range.
- develop and expand these interrogation techniques, including sample preparation, equipment operation and post-processing of outputs to improve throughput and insight.
- integrate historical data and theoretical knowledge with new observations to improve the overall understanding of product weathering, performance and durability
- utilise your learnings and findings to investigate other analysis techniques that may be useful in delivering additional projective insight into product performance
- analyse, present and discuss your results collaboratively with a project team comprising highly skilled scientists and engineers.
- contribute to the design of subsequent experiments and analysis in pursuit of overall project milestones and goals.
More About You
You’re curious, analytical and enjoy working at the intersection of theory and hands-on experimentation. You will bring:
- a degree in science or engineering (materials, chemistry or similar)
- analytical laboratory experience, ideally with demonstrated proficiency in analytical techniques such as Infrared Spectroscopy, Electron Microscopy or similar.
- strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with a desire to relate observed phenomena to theoretical models that help explain ‘why’ and predict ‘what else’.
- the ability to work independently on results collection, followed by engaging presentation and discussion within a highly collaborative team environment
- a willingness to learn, develop and build technical breadth and depth over time
- confidence in analysing, interpreting and communicating technical data and insights
