Hot Metal Handling Co-Ordinator

  • Full-time

Job Description

BlueScope is an Australian-born global success story spanning 15 countries. Our team of over 16,500 people is our strength and we want our people to be safe, successful and well. We’re leaders and innovators in transforming steel into smart products and solutions that support society, today and in the future. We’re proud of brands, like COLORBOND ® steel that inspire and protect everything from hospitals to bridges and stadiums.

The Opportunity

Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Hot Metal Handling Coordinator in our Cokemaking and Ironmaking team based in Port Kembla.   As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

As part of our ironmaking process, hot molten metal is transported from the blast furnace for further processing using torpedo ladles—large, cylindrical tanks lined with heat-resistant refractory material. Pulled by locomotives, these ladles are critical for safely moving metal while maintaining its temperature and integrity.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for the coordination and maintenance of our torpedo ladle fleet across the plant. You’ll work closely with both internal teams and external contractors to schedule and manage repairs, maintenance, and production service needs.

This is a great opportunity for someone who thrives in a team environment but can also take initiative. You’ll be a proactive self-starter with a strong sense of ownership, ensuring service levels are maintained and production continues to run at full capacity.  Candidates who have a heavy industry operations background or trade qualification would be particularly well suited to this opportunity.

This role works a 12-hour rotating day shift roster (4 on 5 off) pattern that will include some weekends and public holidays.

What Will You Do?

As someone who is looking to utilise their trade background or manufacturing expertise, whilst developing their specialist technical knowledge, you’ll:

  • coordinate torpedo ladle movements across the plant to ensure timely and efficient hot metal transport between the blast furnace and steelmaking areas
  • plan and schedule routine maintenance of torpedo ladles to prevent unplanned downtime and ensure safe operation
  • monitor ladle wear and refractory condition, scheduling relining, or repairs as required
  • liaise and coordinator contractor maintenance
  • manage the availability and rotation of ladles, ensuring enough units are always in service while others are under maintenance
  • work closely with operations, logistics, and steelmaking teams to align ladle scheduling with production demands.

More About You

Whether you have experience in process control, scheduling, or maintenance coordination, this role is ideal for someone who is:

  • organised and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage complex scheduling and multiple priorities
  • strong on communication, able to coordinate effectively with maintenance crews, operators, and production teams
  • proactive and forward-thinking, able to anticipate issues and schedule maintenance before breakdowns occur
  • a demonstrated problem-solver, capable of making sound decisions and troubleshooting on the go
  • experienced with basic reporting or computer systems, able to track ladle condition and maintenance records using plant systems or spreadsheets
  • safety-focused, with a strong understanding of safety protocols in heavy industrial environments
