The Opportunity

The Unique Opportunity

Are you passionate about revolutionizing industrial processes?
Does your code burst at the seams with creative and efficient features?
Are you a Sherlock Holmes when it comes to troubleshooting?

We have a rare opportunity for someone of unique talent to join the dynamic Hot Mills Engineering team at our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as a Process Computing Engineer. Our team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of process control engineering to achieve unprecedented levels of efficiency, safety, and sustainability. We strive for continuous improvement, and ongoing technological innovation is expected during the life cycle of any of our deployed systems. This improves the reliability, availability, serviceability, and productivity of our operational technology systems.

BlueScope offers long term job security, market leading superannuation arrangements, opportunities for personal development, work-life flexibility, and participation in our generous profit-share (annual bonus) program.

You will:

Maintain and develop multiple complex process control systems within Hot Mills which includes the Hot Strip Mill, Hot Coil Processing and Despatch, and Plate Mill departments. Your input will have a direct, measurable influence over the heavy industrial processes that shape steel strip, steel plate, and a range of downstream products. You will also:

  • leverage your experience, knowledge, skills, and critical thinking
  • build broad and deep subject matter expertise across Hot Mills
  • facilitate new product developments with research personnel
  • troubleshoot faults spanning from upstream Manufacturing Execution Systems right down to equipment sensors
  • provide technical support and liaison to meet operational needs, planned maintenance, and after hours support to underpin performance, reliability, and quality of Hot Mills operations
  • be a key member of Hot Mills process computing capital and improvement projects

More About You

Whilst Degree level qualifications in Engineering (Computer, Telecommunications or Electrical), Computer Science, or similar relevant tertiary Engineering/IT qualifications are important, your passion for computer systems, the magic they perform, and the challenges that come in optimizing their performance is what will make you successful.  In addition:

  • you can communicate and document and make yourself understood to many people in our business
  • you are an analytical person who values detail, loves problem solving and revels in that satisfying buzz when identifying root causes
  • we value your ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment

Our process control architecture is an eclectic mix of system hardware, operating systems, programming languages, system and user interfaces. Experience across Windows, Linux, AIX, Java, C++, Fortran, Perl, and Python, Oracle, DB2, DevOps, SecOps and a wide range of computing hardware will be highly regarded.

Don’t be discouraged if you have other experience. Our team is a blended mix of people with diverse experience.

Do you have what it takes to become a process control engineer in the steel industry?
Do you have something unique to bring to our table?
