The Opportunity

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Product Innovation and Technology team at our Port Kembla Innovation facility, as a Coatings Development Technologist. Our Innovation team conducts exciting research into emerging technologies to develop new or improved products.  They deliver enhancements to the beauty, functionality and performance of BlueScope’s range, including products such as COLORBOND® steel.

In this exciting opportunity, you will be joining an established team developing superior products and innovative solutions for our customers, now, and into the future.

In this technical role, you will apply your knowledge in the fields of science and engineering to the development of innovative new coatings on steel.  You will review literature, develop hypotheses, conduct laboratory experiments and generate prototype materials. Through extensive evaluation and analysis of results, you will then present your findings and recommendations back to your Innovation project colleagues and collaboratively develop follow-up investigations.

This opportunity is a 12-month fixed term contract.

What Will You Do?

Working within a highly collaborative and project-specific team, you will:

  • successfully contribute to a safe working environment
  • stay up to date with relevant scientific literature and knowledge to inform your work
  • develop hypotheses, generate experimental designs and conduct laboratory-based experiments and prototyping
  • analyse and evaluate your findings and contribute to the development of new methods of experimentation and analysis
  • present and discuss your findings, results and conclusions with the Innovation project team
  • use your laboratory findings to inform larger-scale manufacturing of prototypes

More About You

With your commitment to quality and innovation, you will bring an understanding of experimental design and execution. You will also have:

  • qualifications in Physical Science, Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering or a related discipline
  • knowledge of laboratory operation including safety and quality control
  • experience in designing and executing experiments, recording the findings and utilising the data to prove or disprove hypotheses
  • ability to search for and interpret relevant published research
  • a high level of attention to detail with a scientific and logical approach
  • the ability to present and communicate your results and participate in debate with your peers
