The Opportunity

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as an Electrical Engineering Cadet. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

Working in highly skilled teams, and under the guidance of experienced engineers and technical specialists, you will rotate through various departments gaining invaluable exposure to the steel making process. The skills that you practise will provide a solid foundation towards understanding the engineering profession and furthering your engineering career.

Our Cadetship program at BlueScope creates an opportunity for you to gain world class experience and paid on the job training while simultaneously completing your degree. Cadetships provide a combination of part-time study and part-time work, where you will attend university classes one day a week.

Our Cadetships will commence in January 2022

What Will You Do?

You will initially work with electrical tradespeople to maintain equipment and production facilities onsite. These formative years of your engineering career are invaluable, as you are in involved in designing and managing improvements to the manufacturing assets within the steelworks. We will support you while you work toward obtaining your Certificate III in Electrotechnology as well as studying Engineering at University.

You will rotate through various departments to gain a good appreciation of the steel-making process. You will learn how we smelt ore, converting it into liquid iron and steel and then how we form the raw steel into a finished product fit for our customers’ use across Australia.

You will work in multidisciplinary teams in roles that involve design and specification, construction and commissioning and process support and improvement. This experience will help develop your technical knowledge, planning and management skills to become a professional electrical and automation engineer. 

More About You

Enthusiastic to kick start your career, you will have a keen interest to grow and develop yourself as an engineer, as well as have a commitment to the safety of yourself and others.

You will be comfortable working within a team environment, share ideas and actively collaborate and contribute to your team’s success.

You will currently be in your first or second year of study in electrical engineering at the University of Wollongong (UOW) or be willing to transfer to UOW for the year commencing 2022.
