Job Description

We are seeking a qualified individual to join the Process Development team as a Coating Process Development Technologist to assist with manufacturing improvement and developing manufacturing technology for BlueScope’s current and future coated steel product portfolio. This role will see you provide specialist technical contributions in order to develop and implement new organic coating process technologies and drive continuous process improvement activities for the manufacture of Colorbond® steel.

This is a great opportunity to join the team and be involved in exciting BlueScope Innovation projects. In your first project role, you will support the development of novel thin film application techniques and gain experience with advanced coating equipment through experimental work and production trials. You will explore new product opportunities offered by this process equipment and support the project manager in taking these products from the research and development phase through to implementation in a manufacturing facility.           

This position will also see you responsible for the following;

  • Develop process technology to ensure successful manufacture of new products;
  • Undertake scientific investigation and associated laboratory experimental work and production line trials;
  • Assist with continuous manufacturing improvement and problem-solving activities;
  • Support the development of process models used in the coatings business; and
  • Support team members to deliver BlueScope Innovation projects on time and on budget.

Who are we looking for?
A strong influencer, you will have high level written and verbal communication skills.

You will have at least 2-3 years of experience in R&D or manufacturing improvement, with a background in managing small improvement projects, scientific investigations, or problem-solving activities demonstrated through a systematic approach.

You will have solid knowledge of one or more of the following areas; organic chemistry, fluid properties, paint or thin film application process technology, digital patterning technology, manufacturing process improvement.

You will have the ability to identify and deliver process improvement and process development opportunities for BlueScope’s manufacturing assets.

You will have experience in the use of at least one programming language for scientific or industrial purposes.

Degree qualifications in Science or Engineering is a requirement. Applicants with a PhD in a relevant field will be strongly considered.
