The warehouse team sits within the data team, in the engineering organization. The data team mission is to supply dependable data and algorithms to BlaBla employees and products. The warehouse team mission is to supply dependable data to the company. Dependable means trustworthy and reliable: stakeholders need to be 100% confident their data is accurate, and this data is delivered in a timely and predictable fashion, to whoever needs it.

BlaBlaCar is a data-driven company: from top-management to junior contributors, everyone understands and believes in the value data brings. Supplying data to the company puts the warehouse team at the center of critical decision-making processes, ranging from strategic planning to product analytics, through financial reporting and marketing performance monitoring. The scope covered by the team is wide; accordingly, the warehouse manager role has tremendous impact on the activity. 

The warehouse manager mission is to make supplying dependable data possible. The challenge can be broken down into the following goals:

• Manage the team and setting it up for success;

• Communication and stakeholder management;

• Building a vision to provide data as a service.

What you will contribute to : 

Managing the team and setting it up for success

• Hiring and onboarding newcomers. The team is expected to scale up as operations are ramping up;

• Building new expertise within the team, around real-time data processing. This will go through training existing members and hiring experienced data engineers;

• Taking responsibility for implementing best practices and ensure the team has best in class processes. This is critical to maximize the productivity of the team and mitigate operational risks;

• Structuring the team to scale further in 2020. This includes clarifying roles and responsibilities within the team.

Communication and stakeholder management

• Handling communication for the team vis-a-vis the rest of the company. The focus is on structuring the vision for the team to the outside world;

• Communicating sideways and upwards about roadmap progress, organizational changes & dependencies. Communicating downstream to update the team on company’s context, strategy and articulate their  impact for the team;

• Creating close ties with stakeholders in Marketing, Finance, Product and Engineering organizations. This is critical to ensure information flows enable the team to prioritize its work.

Building a vision to provide data as a service

• Defining a vision and objectives for the team to come up with its roadmap. Communicating with stakeholders to align on strategic priorities. In particular, this means balancing multi-year plans with short-term deliverables (e.g. stream processing for ML);

• Steering the team towards delivering data-as-a service. This includes anticipating use-cases with high business impact, and pave the way to deliver solution enabling them;

• Deploying accountability frameworks to measure efficiency and improve it. This is crucial to legitimate the significant amount of resources invested in data engineering projects;

• Managing third-party resources to strike the right balance between in-house and external expertise. This includes all steps of the budgeting process.

What you will need to be successful: 

• +5 years of leadership experience with demonstrated growth of high-functioning data engineering teams
• Strong project management, organizational and communication skills
• Strong data standards
• Experience working in a fast paced, highly collaborative environment
• Excellent English communication skills 
• Ensure a good mindset and keep a good culture in your team
• Be high-energy, humble, structured, organized, motivated by innovation and a relentless doer and leader
