About This Role
The Manager, Leave Administration is responsible for all aspects of the administration of US leave of absence, disability, and medical / religious accommodation programs. The Manager, Leave Administration leverages their expertise of state, federal and local laws, as well as Biogen policies, to create and manage processes which ensure a consistent and efficient experience for employees and managers. This role requires the ability to think independently and use discretion when evaluating the appropriate course of action for requests. Collaborates effectively with colleagues in Total Rewards, HR Operations, Global Mobility, Occupational Health, HR Partners, Legal, and Payroll.

What You’ll Do
•    As the subject matter expert, the Manager, Leave Administration provides accurate, up-to-date information to employees and managers on leave of absence and disability policies and procedures. Acts as the primary Biogen contact for employees and managers for the duration of the leave and the return-to-work process.
•    Manages the relationship with the third-party leave administrator (TPA). Regularly communicates with the TPA to ensure leaves and disability programs are being administered timely and accurately. Escalates service concerns as needed.
•    Produces bi-weekly payroll reports for all employees on leave.
•    In conjunction with Legal, maintains policies related to leaves of absence and accommodations. Develops and updates educational materials for managers, employees, and HR Partners. Creates templates for accommodation requests and related communications. Delivers training as needed.
•    Reviews all accommodation requests and engages in interactive dialogue with employees and managers. Makes recommendations on whether accommodations can be approved, seeking guidance from Legal as needed. Communicates decisions to employee and managers, and HR Partners when applicable. Follows approved accommodations throughout their lifecycle to obtain timely updates or to close out the accommodation.
•    Proactively identifies and leads process improvement initiatives with the goal of simplifying administration and creating a better employee and manager experience related to leave administration and accommodations. Works with IS partners to develop technology-based solutions whenever possible. 
•    Administers Worker’s Compensation Program in conjunction with Occupational Health nurses. 
•    Initiates notification and termination process for employees who are unable to return from leave. Informs managers and provides necessary information to HR Operations. Reviews any applicable severance packages and benefits with the employee.
•    Tracks all data related to accommodations. Enters and maintains all employee leave of absence data in Workday. Produces and manages reports, metrics, and analytics to identify trends and make program or policy recommendations.
•    Develops and sends applicable communications to employees detailing pay and benefits changes and impacts. 
•    Instructs timekeepers on appropriate time reporting during leaves utilizing applicable policies. 
•    Be accountable for building a concrete understanding of Biogen’s stance and efforts around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as integrate DE&I strategies into the talent lifecycle (e.g. talent management, hiring, compensation)
•    Actively participate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, such as Employee Resource Networks programming, to reinforce HR’s commitment to an inclusive, engaging environment

Qualifications

Who You Are
You are experienced in leave administration with a solid understanding of leave policies and state leave requirements. You are solution-oriented and excel in building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.  You enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a focus on continuous improvement.

•    5 or more years of experience in managing leaves and accommodations. Benefits administration experience desirable.
•    Demonstrated understanding of the implementation of the federal Family Medical Leave Act and Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as state leave requirements
•    Experience partnering with vendors who are fully integrated into standard work processes.
•    Ability to think critically when making process improvement recommendations in a matrixed environment.
•    Strong customer focus with an ability to develop trusting relationships with stakeholders, including but not limited to employees, managers, and HR Partners
•    Ability to effectively communicate complicated issues and make recommendations for resolution to people leaders and employees.
•    Ability to identify and correct problems and procedural irregularities, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
•    Agility in remaining up to date with evolving federal, state, and local regulations.
•    Demonstrated problem solving, project management, time management and priority setting skills.

Education:     Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent combination of experience and education required.
 

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is $81,500 to $131,200. Base salary is determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, job related years of relevant experience, internal equity, and location of the job. Additionally, this role is eligible for participation in Biogen’s LTI grants and other incentive programs.
