About This Role
The Payroll Manager will be responsible for processing and reconciling a multi-state bi-weekly payroll with approximately 5,500 employees and will have one direct report. This person will act as a key escalation and contact point for employees, managers, and cross functional partners. This person will ensure that the payroll process runs smoothly and efficiently using their knowledge and skills to address any issues that may occur. This position interacts daily with the Associate Director of Payroll. In the absence of the Assoc. Director, the Payroll Manager steps in to handle all inquiries that may occur from various internal and external partners including senior executives for payroll processing issues.
What You’ll Do
• Coordinate and manage the entire payroll function. Continuously improve existing process to reduce processing times and costs, including processes around new acquisitions and integrations, while ensuring a high degree of accuracy and precision.
• Ability to apply knowledge of concepts, techniques, and standards to ensure compliance with company policies, internal control standards, and current regulatory requirements; develop procedures/audits to ensure data integrity.
• Act as functional expert for payroll software, processes, and regulations. Provide solutions to a wide range of complex problems which are often unique. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with functional objectives
• Support develops and executes SOX controls to maintain strong internal controls environment; develop appropriate controls for changes to payroll processes. Oversee multiple payroll audits while maintaining effective business relationships, auditors both internal and external
• Partners closely with both internal and external groups that interact with payroll to ensure the highest quality of process and that this process allows for a scalable growth. (HR Compensation, HR Operations, HR General Services, Legal, Accounting, Tax, Business Planning and outside vendors such as ADP, Fidelity, UKG)
• Act as a resource representing US payroll on cross-functional projects related to both internal and external matters, i.e. working with IT on new system requirements/changes.
• Communicate effectively with senior management when Associate Director is not available as needed
Qualifications
Who You Are
You are experienced in day-to-day US payroll operations. You thrive in an independent work environment while being collaborative with cross functional stakeholders. You have a continuous improvement mindset and enjoy solving complex problems.
• 5-7 years of progressive payroll experience
• 2+ years’ experience of managing a payroll team
• Thorough knowledge of general payroll practices and regulations.
• Proficient with large payroll systems and how they integrate (e.g. ADP, Workday, Oracle, UKG, etc.) Knowledge of Ultimate/UKG Payroll preferred
• Understanding of how payroll transactions affect the general ledger and other systems and the ability to reconcile payroll accounts.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Solid MS Office suite software skills required.
• Ability to identify issues and recommend solutions
• Ability to interact with Senior Management.
• Team oriented with ability to effectively manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
• CPP designation a plus
• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree or equivalent payroll experience

The base compensation range for this role is $87,700 to $141,200. Base salary is determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, job related years of relevant experience, internal equity, and location of the job. Additionally, this role is eligible for participation in Biogen’s LTI grants and other incentive programs.
