Job Description

This application is for a 12-week internship role from June - August 2023. Resume review begins in January 2023. 

The Industrial Engineering and Ops & Systems Improvement (IE/OSI) team is responsible for strategic project management and leading continuous improvement efforts to drive operational excellence at the RTP-Bio site.  Using a standardized model for project management, we are the stewards of the site project portfolio. This involves all aspects of project management; from developing and deploying trainings and templates, designing and managing projects, and leading the site leadership through multi-year strategy review and the annual goal setting process.  The team is also responsible for leading continuous improvement (CI) efforts and deploying lean methodologies across the site, as well as driving a continuous improvement culture within the organization. 

Position Description 

The position will focus on the continuous improvement program at the RTP-Bio site.  The scope will entail supporting continued CI efforts in 2023, as well as leading lean initiatives to support operations.  The following are key objectives for this role: 

  • You will utilize industrial engineering tool/techniques to identify and eliminate/reduce waste in operations, specifically manufacturing operations.  
  • You will apply project management/DMAIC knowledge to discrete/short-term initiatives 
  • You will assist with data visualization efforts to support KPI management 
  • You will support site Continuous Improvement training curriculum 
  • You will have fun and learn about and experience the culture of a great company  

Key Learnings for the student 

Two key learnings for the student are: 1) understanding of the various manufacturing modalities and operations at the RTP-Bio site, and 2) learning how continuous improvement projects are identified, prioritized, executed, and evaluated in a Biopharma manufacturing environment.  This will involve learning about cultural change, business practices and governance, and daily operational and CI tools.  By working across functions, the student will also learn strong management, communication, and influence without authority skills.   

Key Areas of Effort 

2023 will see RTP-Bio focused on increasing manufacturing throughput, right-first time initiatives, and elimination of gaps and waste in our site-level value stream map 

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Industrial Engineering concepts and tools/technique to eliminate waste and variability in a process 
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office software, Visio, and other related software packages (e.g., OneNote, SharePoint, Office 365, Wiki, etc.) 
  • Has foundational Project Management/DMAIC knowledge 
  • Good planning and organizational skills; ability to prioritize and accomplish tasks in a fast-paced environment 
  • Comfortable working on cross-departmental projects and with team members at various levels within the organization 
  • Stakeholder management skills with the customer needs perspective 
  • Self-starter, motivated, strong interpersonal and communication skills, creative entrepreneurial spirit 
  • Knowledgeable in utilizing systems to gather data, organize/interpret, and report for various leadership teams, Data visualization capabilities (i.e. Power BI) a plus 
  • Understanding of regulated manufacturing operations a plus 

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date 
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university 

Education 

Desired candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree (or in current undergraduate program) in Industrial Engineering or other Engineering discipline, Science or other related technical or STEM disciplines.
