Job Description

The R&D Project Leader (RDPL) is the single point of accountability for R&D related activities for a late-stage Alzheimer’s product on the Biogen side and provides leadership to an integrated cross functional R&D Project Team (RDPT) consisting of over a dozen members representing over 10 distinct functions to successfully execute the Alzheimer’s R&D activities.  The RDPL leads the development of R&D strategy, consistent with the disease area roadmap, and represents R&D at the Global Medicines and Commercialization (GMC) and the Portfolio and Pipeline Committee (PPC) of the Alzheimer’s Disease Business Unit (ADBU).  The RDPL is a highly visible position reporting to the Head of Neurodegenerative Development Unit and is accountable to senior leadership in R&D and ADBU.  

 

The key roles and responsibilities for RDPL are as follows: 

  • Develop an aligned R&D Strategy for a late-stage Alzheimer’s disease program
  • Develop and execute on communication plan for a late-stage Alzheimer’s disease program strategy to internal and external stakeholders  
  • Lead a large, integrated cross-function RDPT consisting of a dozen members including core team members and representation from other distinct functions to execute the Alzheimer’s R&D activities 
  • Be the single point of accountability for R&D related late stage development activities  
  • Represent R&D at the Global Medicines & Commercialization and the Portfolio & Pipeline Committee of the AD Business Unit 
  • Navigate senior leadership in R&D and AD Business Unit to maintain strong relationships 
  • Lead the RDPT to deliver and communicate the regulatory global filing strategies in US, Japan, EU and RoW 
  • Lead/drive collaboration with Eisai (JDC, JSC) and Neuroimmune Senior leadership 
  • Advocates and represents the project, the R&D cross-functional view and RDPT at governance committees and cross-functional teams 
  • Empowers decision making and promotes collaborative problem solving within RDPT  
  • Guides the RDPT through scenario planning and risk management activities 
  • Creates high performing teams by instilling a culture of scientific rigor, open debate, collaborative teamwork, sense of urgency and accountability 
  • Partners with DU Head and R&D finance to develop long range plans and annual operating plans for R&D strategy on Alzheimer’s  
  • Establishes R&D goals for the project and ensure that project activities are executed on time and within approved budget  
  • Ensure that LCM studies incorporate clinical endpoints to support V & A strategies 
  • Represent late stage compound at DU Leadership team as standing member  

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirements 

MD, PhD, Pharm D, MBA or Advanced degree in biomedical sciences or related discipline 

Minimum experience requirements necessary to perform the job 

10 years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical industry, academic and/or medical research environments; experience in one or more drug modalities within neuroscience or emerging therapeutic disease areas is desirable; prior experience as a core member of late-stage or marketed product R&D project team is desirable

The base compensation range for this role is $175,000 to $303,000. Base salary  is determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, job related years of relevant experience, internal equity, and location of the job. Additionally, this role is eligible for participation in Biogen’s LTI grants and other incentive programs.
