Job Description

Biogen’s Director of Sustainability will be a strategic leader within the Engineering organization, driving the design and implementation of environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives. Reporting to the Head of Global Environmental Health and Safety, this highly influential change agent will build relationships with internal leadership, critical external stakeholders, and vendors to execute Biogen’s long term sustainability vision.

What You Will Do

  • Drive Biogen’s internal and external infrastructure commitments in areas like:
    • Energy – Refine and drive the global implementation of Biogen’s corporate energy and GHG emissions strategy.
    • Fossil Fuel Management – Execute strategies such as developing electricification road maps and outlining a path to reduce plastics in products and across operations.
    • Sustainable Procurement – Help implement supplier risk assessment processes.
    • Internal Stakeholder Relations – Implement “Green Teams,” help create and leverage employee passion for environmental matters.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the sustainability aspects of raw materials, intermediates, and consumer products throughout their lifecycle, prevent/minimize negative impacts, and ensure compliance with all emerging legal and other requirements.

You thrive working cross-functionally across the organization with leaders of all levels (up to Board of Directors).

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • 14+ years of experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, engineering consulting, food and beverage, or other regulated health care industries
  • 5+ years of complex program management across multiple sites
  • 3+ years of experience driving operational sustainability programs
  • In-depth understanding of sustainability best practices - must have proven communications expertise and be well-versed in current trends in the environmental and sustainability disciplines
  • Experience in crafting communications aimed at influencing individuals throughout all levels of a global company
  • Experience with large Opex/Capex budget experience
  • Bachelors’ degree in Science or Engineering

Preferred Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of R&D and Manufacturing operations in a Biopharma environment
  • Global experience preferred
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Science or Engineering
