Job Description

This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2023. Resume review begins in October 2022.

Neurodegenerative diseases are of some of the most pressing public health concerns.  Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing neurological disease, which is characterized by a set of movement disorders and cognitive dysfunction ultimately resulting in premature death.  As new therapies are being developed, critical questions arise around the testing such therapies in large, randomized clinical trials.  Success of these trials requires necessarily the therapy to be effective, but also the design of the trial itself. Optimizing the design of trials is a critical need, which can be well addressed through pharmaco-statistical modeling on patient level data.  We are seeking a graduate student skilled in quantitative analyses to support the development of modeling and simulation tools to inform key decision making around late-stage clinical trial design in Parkinson’s disease.

The candidate will be responsible for utilizing patient-level clinical trial data including clinical measures, biomarkers, and baseline demographics to develop nonlinear mixed effects models as a basis for robust clinical trials simulations.

Position Description:

As a co-op, you will deepen your familiarity with modeling and simulation tools and the important role that these tools play in the drug development process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Visualizing, tabulating, and summarizing aggregated clinical trials data
  • Building and optimizing pharmaco-statistical models connecting various endpoints
  • Programming simulation scenarios using modeling results
  • Communicating model assumptions, results and use cases to stakeholders

Qualifications

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university

Additional criteria:

  • High level of technical and computer programming proficiency.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

The following qualifications are preferred but not needed:

  • Fluency with R programming language
  • Familiarity with mixed effects modeling software, e.g. NONEM, Monolix, Stan
  • Broad understanding of late-stage drug development

Education

  • Graduate student (M.S. or Ph.D.)
  • Desired majors include: Biomedical or Chemical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Pharmacometrics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physics, or related disciplines
