Job Description

This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2023. Resume review begins in October 2022.

The co-op will be imbedded in Research Data Science group in Translational Biology, a team with significant analytical expertise in data digital transformation, biological data interpretation, generating hypothesis for new drug targets/precision medicine and artificial intelligence.

To support Biogen’s mission of being pioneers in neuroscience, our group pilots cutting edge AI/ML and visualization technologies, builds biologist friendly visualization tools and leads cross-functional data-driven human target identification.

Position Description

As a co-op, you will focus on improving Biogen’s current analysis pipeline for spatial gene expression profiling by reading associated literature, developing exploratory simulations to compare analysis approaches, and finally apply on Biogen datasets by integrating single nuclei RNAseq (snRNAseq) and spatial transcriptomics data for mouse models as well as human brain MS lesions.

Specifically, you will:

  • Investigate literature and available R/python packages to discover the latest algorithms for spatial gene expression analysis
  • Perform simulation and benchmarking studies to determine performance characteristics of different spatial analysis approaches
  • Refine/improve current statistical analysis pipelines at Biogen for spatial gene expression analysis. This may involve theoretical exploration of different spatial correlation structures, model forms, missing data imputation strategies, QC filtering approaches, or visualization algorithms
  • Application of spatial gene expression pipeline on Biogen generated MS mouse and human datasets to provide new insight on MS disease MOA

Qualifications

  •  Strong programming and analysis skills (R/python or other languages).
  • Good communication skills, verbal, and writing.
  • Priority will be given to candidates with experience with analyzing spatial gene expression and snRNAseq data. Strong statistical background is desired.

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
