Job Description

The Associate Director, Scientific Communications - MS will lead a small team comprising medical publication and communication professionals. This role will report into the Head of the MS Scientific Partnerships. (S)he will lead the strategic development and execution of a comprehensive and integrated scientific communication plan that incorporates health literacy principles and digital dissemination tools.

The Associate Director will work hand in hand with the MS product medical director, MERI team and will liaise with other cross-functional/cross regional organizations, being a main contributor in the integration of teams to ensure alignment & efficiencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Build strategic scientific communication plans and overseeing the execution of tactics targeting both internal and external audiences through medical communications materials and publications.
  • Coordinate with the other Scientific Communication Leads within the MS Therapeutic Area to ensure alignment to the MS Narrative and maximize efficiencies in material development /dissemination and prioritization.
  • Coordinate with the health communication excellence team to develop a digital communication strategy and maximize the impact of the deliverables through innovative tools or channels.
  • Co-lead cross-functional communication meetings, provide strategic guidance/recommendations to ensure cross-functional alignment.
  • Work closely with the global and local medical teams to ensure strategic communication and alignment to the Medical Strategy/communication objectives.
  • Coordinate with regions, field medical leadership and field medical teams to educate and facilitate the implementation of scientific narrative, deliverables and content tools.
  • Liaise with the medical field teams to better understand the evolving needs and communications gaps.
  • Provide strategic input to medical education and congress educational activities (e.g. Booth materials, symposia, etc.)
  • Ensure compliance with Biogen publications policy and standard operating procedures and with external guidelines on good publication practices.
  • Lead annual budgeting process and ensure that scientific communications tactics are delivered within budget and defined timelines/metrics.
  • Work with the analytics team to understand impact of communications and adjusts the scientific communication plan to address the needs.

Qualifications

  • Advanced scientific/medical training equivalent to PhD, PharmD; and experience at pharmaceutical / biotechnology companies or medical communications agency.
  • Prior experience in scientific communications (publications, congress management or medical communications) including development of cross-functional strategies/plans.
  • Strategic mindset and demonstrated experience interplaying between Worldwide Medical and other departments, including Commercial, Compliance, Legal, and Regulatory.
  • Ability to coordinate complex matrix organizations and demonstrated ability to influence change across diverse teams.
  • Ability to set priorities, deal with ambiguity and ability to be independent, multi-tasked and results-oriented with a hands-on attitude in a fast-paced and energetic environment.
  • People management experience is desirable.
  • Educational requirement: PharmD, MD, or PhD in a biological science.
