Job Description

The Director, Medical Strategy & Execution, is responsible for driving the development and execution of the strategic plan and related initiatives for his/her assigned Therapeutic Area (TA).  As part of the extended leadership team, he/she will act as a strategic partner to their assigned TA Head, providing leadership, insights, and coordination to drive key strategic initiatives that facilitate business agility, customer focus and ensure compliance standards. Having a matrixed leadership role, he/she will identify and oversee critical operational aspects and cross-functional projects. This role also partners with the Medical Operations worldwide network, including functional and regional Medical Strategy Execution to drive consistency across the Globe. Additionally, he/she will have oversight of all medical planning processes (ICP, LRP, AOP) and data generation initiatives for the assigned TA, as well as manage the centralized pull-through of Biogen’s medical operations services in coordination with the Sr. Manager, Medical Operations. 

What You’ll Do

·       Partner with leadership to develop the overarching medical strategy for assigned TA, identifying and mapping key priorities

·       Align cross-functionally (e.g. PDC) and regionally to develop the strategic plan and execute on assigned priorities

·       Drive execution of medical plan in coordination with the Global Medical team through project planning and budget discipline; manage annual goal setting and progress to ensure strategic objectives are being met

·       Lead annual planning processes (ICP/LRP/AOP), in coordination with Finance and HR, to ensure workforce and activity planning supports the annual and long-term goals; oversee budget from development through execution

·       Collaborate to develop the team vision, scope, and objectives; drive a strong culture that fosters accountability, trust, and respect for all team members  

·       Represent TA in the annual Integrated Evidence Generation planning process and oversee data generation prioritization and tracking

·       Support the development and implementation of the launch readiness and commercialization plan globally, as applicable

·       Partner with TA Head to plan and lead Strategy & Execution Engine (SEE) meetings creating awareness of global priorities, availability of key resources, and ensuring affiliate alignment to global strategy and plans

·       Drive processes and alignment around prioritized activities and pull through medical operations services/resources to ensure cross-functional networks, transparency, communication, and best practices

·       Establish best-practice methodologies within the Strategy & Execution network to leverage synergies in driving creative solutions, consistency, and awareness across regions, TAs, and functions; develop and drive strategies to ensure operational excellence

·       Develop and manage strategic content and communications for senior leadership and cross-functional engagement

·       Lead and participate in critical planning meetings and/or cross-functional committees to develop objectives and implement strategies and procedures; represent TA on behalf of Head as necessary

·       Identify, support, and in some cases lead the continuous improvement of barriers to execution

·       Partner with Biogen Digital Health, R&D, and Commercial to drive alignment with strategic priorities

·       Lead and support business critical events, initiatives, and other work as needed

You have strong leadership skills, knowledge of biopharma industry standards and practices and experience in program management and business process. While you hold accountability above all else, you must also possess the ability to generate enthusiasm and quickly gain the trust and respect of peers and senior leadership, and have a track record of successfully driving results through strong partnership with others

 

Qualifications

Required Skills

·       BA / BS required

·       12+ years of experience working in the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, or Life Sciences industry

·       Proven business and financial acumen, including strategy and long-range planning experience

·       Very strong organizational, managerial and leadership skills (including influence without formal authority)

·       Excellent social competencies and ability to drive results within a highly matrixed organization effectively and efficiently

·       Outstanding communication skills and strong ability to build and cultivate internal and external networks.

·       Strong ability to identify and mitigate risk, analyze and solve problems, and formulate and drive key decisions

·       Strategic thinker with high attention to detail, strong facilitation skills and ability to execute in a timely manner

·       Excellent operational skills and project management capabilities

·       Self-starter with ability to work independently or within teams; high degree of innovation and enthusiasm for identifying, prioritizing, and executing on business process and system improvements

·       Experience in identifying and supporting continuous improvement opportunities

·       Excellent command of computer skills (Excel, Outlook, Word, Power Point, etc.)

Preferred Skills

·       Masters, PhD and/or MBA highly preferred

·       Worldwide Medical and/or Commercial functional knowledge preferred

·       Change management experience highly desired

·       People management experience preferred
