Co-op: Mass spectrometry (MS)-based Bioassay
- Full-time
- Region: US
- Department: Interns & Co-ops
Job Description
This is for a 6-month position from July - December 2021.
The Bioassay and High-Throughput Screening (BHTS) group works on a wide range of projects and also supports the efforts of other groups at Biogen by designing and executing robust and high-throughput assays. One of the main capabilities at BHTS is developing Label-free or mass spectrometry-based assays to support the efforts of internal medicinal chemistry, DMPK, Physical Biochemistry and other groups.
Position Description
Biogen is searching for a highly motivated and collaborative Summer Co-op to join the Bioassays and High-Throughput Screens (BHTS) group in the Biotherapeutics and Medicinal Sciences department. The Co-op in Quantitative Pharmacology (MS-based Bioassay) will assist on developing MS and LC-MS-based assays. Day to day responsibilities include cell culture, protein and small molecule and lipid sample preparation, developing LC separation and MS methods. Maintaining good written records of laboratory procedures and analyzing the results are also expected. The intern will participate and attend group/team meetings and will present in an internal poster session at the end of the program. The intern will work closely with a member(s) of the Physical Biochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry groups to learn the details of on-going projects that will require novel method development. This Co-op program is intended to help expand the analytical capabilities of the BHTS group to design more SAR-driving MS-based and drug mechanism of action assays.
Qualifications
To participate in the Biogen Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- Grade point average of 3.2 or higher preferred
- At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
Additional qualifications:
- Basic laboratory experience
- Good communication and inter-personal skills
- Hands on experience in reverse-phase and HILIC chromatography
- Hands on experience in sample preparation and biological techniques such as protein, peptide, metabolite and lipid preparation for mass spectrometry analysis as well as mammalian cell culture, gel electrophoresis, protein digestion and western blotting
- Experience in LC-MS/MS or MALDI-MS/MS
- Experience in testing small molecules in cell-based or biochemical assays in 96- or 384-well plates and working knowledge of semi-automated liquid handling devices are highly desirable.
- Perform data analysis and visualization using appropriate software
- Efficiently manage time to enable pursuit of multiple objectives in parallel
Education
Completion as a first-year graduate student before Co-op starts and currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program in biology, chemistry. Pharmacy, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
