Co-op: Associate Scientist, Analytical Development

  • Full-time
  • Region: US
  • Department: Interns & Co-ops

Job Description

This is for a 6-month full-time co-op from January to June 2021.

The Analytical Development (AD) department plays a key role in advancing Biogen’s innovative therapies for neurological and neurodegenerative therapies by providing the scientific information needed to insure they are safe and efficacious. Analytical Development uses cutting edge technologies to support each of Biogen’s four therapeutic modalities: gene therapy, large molecule proteins, anti-sense oligonucleotides, and small molecule pharmaceuticals. The AD Bioassay group is currently very busy with development of novel methods for characterization of gene therapy drug candidates.

Position Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative co-op student to join the AD Bioassay group. The candidate will work with the team on evaluation of a novel 2D ddPCR-based technology for characterization of DNA encapsidated in AAV-based viral vectors used in Gene Therapy. 2D ddPCR with FAM-and HEX-labeled probes targeting different positions in the same rAAV genome potentially allows to discriminate the intact rAAV genome from incomplete genomes and quantify both. The amount of intact AAV genome have been shown to correlate with GFP expression in accelerated stability studies. The same strategy of combining different primers and probes could be used for quantitative assessment of encapsidated antibiotic resistance genes and other impurities, plasmid purity etc.

Qualifications

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Grade point average of 3.2 or higher preferred
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university

Additional qualifications: Essential to the position are familiarity with qPCR, general molecular biology techniques, and effective problem-solving skills.
