The Platform Innovation & DevOps Commercial & Medical IT Principal Architect will report to the Director Platform Innovation & DevOps Commercial & Medical IT and will work under their direction, on defining the IT solutions to support business development within Biogen.

The IT Principal Architect will oversee the ecosystem of applications and/assets within a function (Commercial & Medical) and/or functional technology platform (e.g. Salesforce). She/he will engage with Biogen’s Commercial and Marketing Business teams, and relevant project teams to partner with the delivery teams and solution architects in order to translate business requirements into a target architecture definition that will drive Technology and solution design decisions.  The role will provide inputs around Commercial / Medical use cases and assist with development of reference architectures, roadmaps and standards in collaboration with the broader architecture team. The IT Principal Architect will develop high level design for programs and projects. He/ She will also design compelling Proofs of Concept (PoCs) to demonstrate innovative solutions in the commercial and medical IT space to ultimately benefit Biogen and its patients.

The Commercial and Medical IT Principal Architect should possess broad IT background and should demonstrate expertise in the important aspects of a common platform and integration of Commercial & Marketing technology systems, where the foundational elements are on Salesforce and Veeva platforms.
With a strong blend of technical and business skills, the Architect should use a consultative approach to understand business and technical requirements and help the Global Commercial and Medical IT group develop a compelling IT strategy and drive technology selections.
The role will focus on enabling new capabilities, innovation, standardization and integration of various systems across our Global Markets landscape, using a combination of commercially available software or custom development where needed, with a strong emphasis on integrating applications on the Biogen cloud OR behind the firewall, with the various SaaS applications.

This person must have implementation experience, must understand our business strategy and help define an IT systems architecture to support that strategy. The role will also be responsible for detecting critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement that will ultimately benefit the organization.

Qualifications

• Expert understanding of foundational architectural concepts (Business Architecture, Application Architecture, Information and Technology architectures, design, business technology strategy, quality management, human dynamics, and IT environment).
• Vertical industry experience in one or more domains. Extensive application architecture design experience and prior exposure to multiple SDLC’s and agile methodologies.
• Prior experience with distributed application performance engineering, cloud computing, social media programs, mobile application development, database design concepts, middleware concepts, user interface development, and information security engineering.
• 8 years relevant experience in IT, systems/platform architecture within a life sciences company or consulting firm supporting the healthcare industry.
• 4+ years of hands on experience in working on platform architecture on Commercial & Medical technologies: CRM (Veeva) / Salesforce (Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud) / Cloud (AWS) based architecture.
• A good understanding of the architectural principals of web based platforms including SaaS / PaaS, multi-tenancy, multi-tiered infrastructure and application servers. Understanding of cloud offerings in the market and ability to discuss cloud architectures along with basic understanding of mobile platforms.
• A good understanding of Information/Application security on premise and on-cloud is essential
• Hands on experience with enterprise application integration, including Microservices and API based integration of marketing automation and CRM platforms with back end systems, SOA, ESB, EAI, ETL environments. 
• Excellent problem solving and analytical capabilities with ability to understand commercial business information, logically structure them into IT elements that build practical solutions, identify root causes of issues, and experience with trouble shooting and impact analysis. Good communication skills.
• Any certification on enterprise architecture (Zachman, TOGAF, etc.) methodologies will be preferred.

Education

• Undergraduate or graduate degree with 10+ years relevant experience.
