Job Description

Medical Science Liaison (MSL): The Alzheimer’s Disease MSL role is field based customer facing role, activities should be customer focused with the intent to maximise medical one on one interactions with Key Medical Experts (KMEs)/HCPs (virtually and Face to Face), within the Melbourne, VIC area.

This role will mainly be dedicated to medical affairs activities related to Alzheimer’s Disease focusing on imaging and biological biomarkers. There will be approximately 50-70% travel in this role. 

  • Acts as a scientific expert knowledgeable of Biogen products, disease state and competitors 
  • Establishes long term scientific/strategic relationships with leading specialists (physicians, nurses, allied health), and with related medical societies and academic centres of excellence 
  • Ensures key opinion leaders (KMEs) and organizations have access to relevant scientific information 
  • Facilitates KME involvement in educational forums and advisory boards to optimize scientific knowledge exchange 
  • Gathers meaningful medical insights and shares with other internal functions
  • Understands and report the bottle necks for access to biomarkers in their specific region of interest.

Key Accountabilities:

1. Key Medical Expert (KME) Engagement (Field Focused) 

  • Identify key opinion leaders (KMEs) in specified therapeutic area and work in collaboration with respective commercial counterparts in engaging KMEs from a medical perspective 
  • Develop, maintain and implement KME engagement plans to build and maintain strong scientific relationships such that Biogen is recognised as an industry partner of choice
  • Provide current, accurate and balanced scientific education to KMEs/HCPs and facilitate data discussions in relevant therapeutic areas 
  • Provide scientific presentations to individual physicians or groups of physicians in multiple channels solutions, e.g. scientific seminars, round table, journal clubs, digital engagements
  • Source and brief international and local speakers for national and state meetings according to internal process
  • Reactively explore & facilitate clinician driven ideas for Investigator Initiated Trials (IITs), post marketing clinical activities such as registry/database projects, epidemiological surveys, clinical studies 
  • Act as a liaison between investigators and Biogen ensuring regular communication regarding the progress of IIT proposals 

Scientific Data Knowledge and Communication - Field Focused 

  • Collaborate with Medical Managers to generate high quality approved medical and scientific presentations aligned to medical strategy
  • Keep abreast of relevant medical literature. Review Biogen literature alerts and work with Product Managers and SFE (Scientific Field Excellence) responsible for education of ABMs on relevant literature alerts 
  • Discuss, analyse and educate on appropriate medical and scientific publications and clinical study findings in collaboration with Medical Managers/Therapeutic Head
  • Attend national and international scientific conferences, support booth team and develop medical summaries for use within the company 

2. Internal Collaboration 

  • Work with relevant commercial counterparts to address specific regional needs from a medical perspective in alignment with both medical and commercial brand plans 
  • Record all healthcare professional (HCP) interactions and track MSL activity in the CRM database 
  • Participate in respective integrated brand team meetings to provide in-field medical updates, trends, insights and competitor intelligence 
  • Contribute to in-field medical training of area business managers (ABMs) and be available as a medical resource for the Sales team Support Medical Manager in the coordination of advisory board meetings/steering committees, including speaker briefings 
  • Collaborate with relevant medical and commercial team/s to develop strategy and execute tactics on communication of complex scientific information to relevant healthcare professionals 
  • Collaborate with Global Clinical Operations (GCO) and Medical Managers with respect to clinical trial execution e.g. site identification, Site Initiation visits 
  • Collaborate with Medical Director to drive approval and set-up of appropriate IITs 
  • Regularly (at least monthly) liaise with other medical and commercial team/s to ensure consistency and alignment in strategy/tactics 

3. Compliance

  • Maintain compliance within the Medicines Australia and Biogen frameworks and codes of conduct
  • Maintain 100% training compliance on all allocated courses and internal SOPs
  • Ensure speaker briefings, contracts and slide review processes adhere to SOPs

Other accountabilities in this role:

  • Recording of customer interactions and activity in CRM system 
  • Thought leaders mapping and KME engagement plans 
  • Medical insights gathering and sharing with internal team 
  • Management of IIT proposals

Qualifications

To demonstrate success in this role you will be degree qualified, preferably in science, pharmacy or medicine and will have have a minimum of 3 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry (disease area experience will be highly regarded) as well as knowledge of the drug commercialisation and clinical research process.
