Sr. Scientist, Process Development

  • Full-time
  • Region: US
  • Department: Technical Development

Job Description

This scientist will work in our oligonucleotide development laboratory located adjacent to our GMP manufacturing site in RTP, North Carolina. The individual will provide synthetic organic chemistry support and insight to teams developing end-to-end manufacturing processes and executing the manufacturing process of oligonucleotide drugs or drug candidates. As an integral member of the process development team located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he/she will also conduct laboratory experiments to explore novel chemistry ideas to improve the oligonucleotide synthesis process for superior consistency, productivity, and product purity. This position may also perform organic process research and development of small molecules, oligonucleotides, and their conjugates.

Responsibilities:

Design and conduct of laboratory experiments to optimize the manufacturing processes of oligonucleotides for large scale synthesis with an emphasis on reducing costs, understanding and controlling process-related impurities, and improving starting material processes and quality.

  • As a technical expert, provide synthetic organic chemistry perspectives to other teams in the antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) organization engaged in the development of our end-to-end manufacturing process and execution of the manufacturing process.
  • Travel to Cambridge (when needed)to lead, participate, and perform scale-up of the synthesis to provide preclinical materials in our Cambridge laboratories.
  • Write research reports and present results internally and externally.
  • Performing organic process research and development of small molecules, oligonucleotides, and conjugates.

Qualifications

  • Areas of specialization should reside in the fields of synthetic organic chemistry with a deep understanding of reactivity and reaction mechanisms.
  • Experience in nucleosides, nucleotides, oligonucleotides, solid-phase synthesis, automation or programming of instruments, such as oligonucleotide synthesizer, is preferred.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment, design and execute experiments, collect and interpret data, and effectively communicate in written and oral forms are essential.
  • The individual must be self-driven, an independent thinker, vigorous and thorough in conducting experiments, collecting and interpreting data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.

Education:

Ph.D. in organic chemistry or related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of experience beyond graduate work, an M.S. degree with a minimum of 8 years of industrial experience, or a BS degree with a minimum of 10 years in a relevant role.
