Job Description

Part of the Platform Engineering team within “Infrastructure, Architecture & Operations”, the Director of Network Services serves as the Design Authority for Biogen’s Global Network Infrastructure,  leading a team of Infrastructure Platform Owners to build, run, and improve capabilities including: Optimized, Resilient, High Bandwidth Software Defined Wide Area Networking (SDWAN), efficient IP Address Management capabilities,  state of the art Load Balancing & WAN Optimization capabilities, and transforming Biogen’s network providing business agility.  This position oversees carrier relationships, is accountable for financial and budget planning, and has line responsibility for the Managed Service Provider

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate current processes and drive execution of simplification, automation, resiliency, and continuous improvement initiatives within Biogen’s Local, Wireless, Global, and Cloud-Edge/InterCloud networks.
  • Be recognized as the Subject Matter Expert and build technical leadership within your team.  Create a culture of Performance, Customer Service, Operational Excellence, and Value within the organization.
  • Oversee or Lead Network Transformation initiatives such as SD-WAN, IPAM, Cloud Edge, and Network Automation capabilities . The role will be accountable for overall network services throughout the Infrastructure Hosting environments (Campus, affiliate, Manufacturing, Data Center, Colocation, and Cloud) and associated processes including definition and compliance of approved standards, SOPs, and consistent reporting of performance metrics.  This role will also directly manage carrier relationships for Biogen’s global network.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, service providers and business units on shared goals and projects that satisfy business, functional, and operational objectives.  Solicit performance feedback from customer groups and drive improvements.
  • Research new or alternative technologies, document findings, conduct pilots and evaluate multiple vendors, make recommendations, and develop business cases to justify the investment.
  • Lead your team to develop and maintain a 3-5 year strategy, implementation roadmaps, resource allocations and leadership to project teams.  Lead others to solve complex problems and use sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgement and identify innovative solutions.
  • Ensure capacity and operational monitoring and alerting of related environments. Review monthly key management reports denoting platform health, availability, capacity, budget and continuous improvement opportunities. Drive efficiencies through continuous improvement of delivery methodologies and practices.
  • Stay current on industry trends and new technologies to recommend initiatives for improvements and growth. Conduct research and make recommendations on products, services, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Manage service-level standards and ensure all platform activities (implementation, maintenance and support) are carried out in accordance with organization change control, technical policies, SOPs, best practices and standards.
  • Define and manage the departmental Long Range Plan budget and associated Headcount, Operational Budget, and Strategic Investment funding required to meet Biogen’s long-term goals for an efficient and high-performing network balanced with cost optimization.  Manage carrier relationships and evaluate/recommend optimal financial management practices.

 

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Experienced technical leader who can develop and lead implementation of a compelling 3-5 year strategy to support Biogen’s platform & connectivity needs into the future. 
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to influence across all levels of the organization.  Ability to communicate complex technical situations and solutions.
  • Strong program & project management background with proven implementation of infrastructure transformational capabilities.
  • 12-15 years of experience in IT Infrastructure.  Minimum of 7 years of experience in network engineering or management, at least 5 in a design/architecture capacity.
  • Hands-on, demonstrable, technical background is essential. Expertise in Network Switching, Routing, BGP, OSPF, MPLS protocols, VPN, and QoS is a must.
  • Experience in global multi-site environments and leading a 24x7x365 NOC/operational team.
  • Ability to set and manage both customer and management expectations.
  • Demonstrable experience acting in a consultative manner, either in Professional Service, Management Consulting, or Internal Consulting.
  • Experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries with sufficient understanding of regulatory and GXP requirements is required.
  • 7-10 years of experience designing and building large enterprise systems is required. 5+ years leading a team of 15 or more staff (employees & service providers) is required.

 Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline with an IT focus is preferred. Masters or certifications in technology stacks is a plus. (eg CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure).
