Job Description

The Dean of Students will work with the Head of School to shape and sustain our distinctive culture.  A major objective of the Dean of Students will be to have students internalize the School’s values and aspire to academic excellence and a socially contributory life.

The Dean of Students will also be responsible for helping educators develop their classroom management skills and for managing the school’s system of positive discipline.

In addition, the Dean of Students will oversee the School’s efforts to ensure that students arrive at school ready to learn, and will coordinate their academy's student life organizations and activities (through which students learn confidence, initiative and leadership).  


Candidates should at minimum hold a standard teaching certification (supervisor certification is preferred).

  • A commitment to preparing every student for college and to developing every student’s values and character;

  • Belief in a structured and predictable environment for children and a commitment to education standards, statewide testing, and accountability; and

  • A commitment to building student relationships and engaging parents/guardians in their children’s education.

It would be a definite plus for the candidate to also possess:

  • A clear record of elevating student achievement in an urban classroom, with a very strong understanding of pedagogy and how it can drive results; Demonstrated success using data to drive instruction;

  • Knowledge of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the new Common Core Standards;

  • A record of successfully leading, managing and facilitating collaboration in, a diverse team of teachers; and

  • An understanding of Teach Like a Champion class-management techniques and/or training by Teach For America, Education Pioneers, The New Teacher Project, or New Leaders for New Schools would all be considered a definite plus.
