DIRECTOR OF PLANT ENGINEERING

  • Full-time

Company Description

Belmont Metals is a leading manufacturer and supplier of non-ferrous alloys and virgin metals serving the industry since 1896 from our Brooklyn, New York facility. Belmont Metals products are used the world over in industries that stem from the military to jewelry. Our commitment to quality and service has kept us at the forefront of the metals industry.

As we build on more than a century of operations, we're looking for a hands-on engineering leader to modernize and strengthen our plant's technical backbone — from preventive maintenance and machinery procurement to production set-up and process improvement.

Job Description

We are seeking a Director of Plant Engineering to lead our industrial engineering functions while also owning maintenance operations and machinery procurement plant-wide. This is a self-starter role for someone who can move fluidly between hands-on shop floor problem-solving and higher-level planning — overseeing preventive maintenance programs, directing mechanical and industrial design work, managing capital equipment purchasing, and driving continuous plant improvements. A metallurgical background is a plus, but not required.

Industrial Engineering & Plant Improvement

  • Lead industrial engineering initiatives across the plant, including process design, workflow optimization, and production set-ups.
  • Provide mechanical and industrial design support for new and existing equipment and processes.
  • Identify and implement plant improvement projects that increase throughput, quality, and safety.
  • Prepare and manage environmental reports and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

Maintenance Leadership

  • Own and continuously improve the plant's preventive maintenance program for production and facility equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and systems issues to minimize downtime.
  • Build and manage maintenance schedules, spare-parts inventory, and service records.
  • Supervise and develop maintenance technicians and outside contractors as needed.

Machinery Procurement & Equipment Management

  • Evaluate, specify, and procure production machinery, tooling, and plant equipment.
  • Manage vendor relationships, quotes, and contract negotiations for capital equipment purchases.
  • Oversee installation, commissioning, and setup of new equipment, including computer equipment and networking.
  • Track equipment lifecycle costs and build data-driven replacement and upgrade recommendations.

Qualifications

  • A self-starter who takes ownership of problems from diagnosis through resolution.
  • Proven experience in industrial engineering, plant maintenance, or manufacturing operations — ideally in metals, alloys, or a related heavy-manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude combined with the ability to manage projects and vendors.
  • Computer literacy required, including Microsoft Word and Excel; familiarity with setting up computer equipment and networks.
  • Working knowledge of environmental reporting and plant compliance requirements.
  • Metallurgical background a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with production, safety, and management teams.
