Job Description

The Cytology Technical Specialist will work Regular Full-Time Days Monday to Friday, from 8AM - 4:30 PM and will share in routine work and perform unusual or difficult test and procedures as needed.

  • As a Cytology Technical Specialist, you will review all maintenance, quality control and proficiency test results and records to assure established procedures are followed and the proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • The Cytology Technical Specialist takes appropriate corrective action.
  • The Cytology Technical Specialist establishes, reviews, and assures technical policies and procedures are observed in accordance to regulations.
  • As a Cytology Technical Specialist, you will coordinate technical functions and activities of the assigned technical area while ensuring adherence to regulations and service to laboratory customers.
  • The Cytology Technical Specialist ensures accuracy and timeliness of daily work.
  • Participates in the investigation of new products, equipment, techniques, and methodologies and introduces, demonstrates, and recommends as appropriate.
  • Direct, review, and/or verify work of other clinical laboratory personnel and/or students.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Prerequisites include a Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology from an accredited cytotechnology program (preferred).
  • Candidates must be qualified as a Cytotechnologist and a Supervisor in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations.

Experience:

  • 6 years experience in standard cytology laboratory methodologies is required.

Licensure/Certificates:

  • Licensure by NYS SED OR licensure eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Cytotechnologist.
  • Limited Permit is granted to individuals that meet the educational requirements for licensure except for the licensing examination which must be taken within one year from the issuance of a limited permit. Limited License is granted to individuals who are working in the lab completing the education and examination requirements necessary to be licensed as a Cytotechnologist.
  • Limited licenses cannot be renewed and will not be valid beyond September 1, 2018.

Skills:

  • Must be capable of using effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize workload and direct other laboratory professionals with minimum supervision.
  • Must effectively train students and new employees.

Scope of Practice:

  • Individuals are required to practice within the responsibilities of their license, and perform specific tasks for which they have been deemed competent.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires extensive standing and routine walking.
  • Must be able to push/pull less than 50 lbs and lift objects of less than 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to identify and differentiate colors.
