Responsibilities

The Dispensing Optician will work Part Time, Days and assists all patients in the selection of eyewear and provides eyewear products in accordance with patient need and requests.

  • Provides patients with the highest degree of quality and accuracy.
  • Sets a standard for excellence in creating a warm, caring, friendly and concerned environment and attitude toward all patients.
  • Fills patients prescriptions accurately with no more than 1 error per month based on review of monthly eyewear center reports, direct observation from Eyewear Center Supervisor.
  • Adjusts and repairs eyewear successfully with no more than 2 exceptions per month as witnessed by the Eyewear Center Supervisor.
  • Assists Lead Optician with the communication with optical salesmen and purchasing of ophthalmic goods.
  • Communicates and updates patients on a weekly basis regarding back-ordered items as observed by the Eyewear Center Supervisor.
  • Maintains competence and upgrades skills through internal and external continued education.
  • Understands the role and responsibilities of individual members as part of a health care team, including their ability to promote the delivery of quality healthcare and financial and information responsibilities.
  • Interacts effectively and sensibly with all members of the healthcare team.

Qualifications

Bassett Healthcare Network follows the New York State and New York State Department of Health COVID-19 vaccine mandates for healthcare workers. Education/Qualifications:

  • High school graduation is required.

Experience:

  • Two years work experience as a licensed dispensing optician with appropriate skill in fabrication and/or an Associate degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing.
  • Experience assisting the public in an ophthalmic patient care environment is preferred.

*Apprentice Optician Licensure/Certificates:

  • New York State Ophthalmic Dispensers and/or Contact Lens License are required for Dispensing Optician.

Skills:

  • Ability to assist patients with meeting their ophthalmic prescription needs.

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires frequent normal walking, standing and sitting.
  • You must have the ability to frequently stoop, bend, and lean forward and backward.
  • Occasionally, position may need to assist with transferring patients from wheelchair into dispensing chair and assist with other similar transfers.
  • The work location is a normal ophthalmic practice in a clinic environment.
  • Position requires frequent contact with patients and many departments within the hospital and clinic setting.
  • Hazards may include burns by electricity, cuts from broken lenses, working with tools, working with machinery and tinting dyes.
  • This position is weekdays.
