Summary

Hatch and Bantrel have formed the Hatch Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. BHP’s Jansen Potash Project located approximately 140 km east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is BHP’s first and most advanced potash project. Jansen will add diversity and a Canadian presence to BHP’s global portfolio. Jansen’s large resource endowment provides the opportunity to develop it in stages, with anticipated initial capacity of 4.35 Mtpa. The BHP Board has recently sanctioned Jansen Project (Stage 1), with a US $5.7 billion investment. The project is now entering the construction phase, with the first potash expected in 2027.

The Jansen project has set up a dedicated team to execute the mining scope. As the mining scope is on the project critical path, this team supports the sequential nature of mining tasks while ensuring seamless interfaces with the rest of the Jansen project. This team will promote shared accountability between BHP and HBJV, trusting that the best person is selected for each role as they work towards safely delivering the mining scope on time, on budget, and with high quality. This team will strive for effective work planning, rapid and empowered decision-making, and continuous improvement through a joint construction and operational mindset. BHP and HBJV leadership hope to expose the team to new perspectives, ways of working, and long-term career progression opportunities.

ROLE PURPOSE: 

The Mining Field Engineer (MFE) will work with the Manager Mining Field Engineering (MMFE) and other Mining Field Engineers from various engineering disciplines to form the link between the Engineer of Record (Hatch) and the construction team for all engineering related work within their engineering discipline. They will focus on ensuring that all aspects of construction meet the design intent.  

The MFE is the first point of contact to address technical queries and non-conformances related to design issues within their specific engineering discipline. This shall include interpretation of designs, project specifications, and technical & engineering functional standards and seeking validation as required to support the construction team.  They will work as part of the broader site construction team to assist with solving construction challenges. 

They will complete walkdowns of the construction to perform surveillance audits of key engineered elements to assure the design intent is being met and / or corrected where required. They will work within the Integrated Construction Centre (ICC) platforms to issue technical queries, non-conformance reports, and other documentation as required. 

This is a site based position working a 15&13 – Days and Nights rotation.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

• Completes inspections associated with all project hold points for the construction of all infrastructure included within the scope,  

• Completes routine shaft, headframe, hoist, mining equipment and other operational inspections and reports as dictated by operation manuals and the Maintenance function,  

• Takes part in on-site and off-site mockups to ensure quality standards are met and to assist with trouble shooting areas of concern, 

• Participates in the construction walk-downs and verify closure of punch items 

• Works with the overall site construction team to help define and execute “best for project” solutions to construction challenges that arise, 

• Responsible for reviewing Field Installation Work Plans (FIWPs) to ensure compliance with project and industry codes, standards, and specifications, 

• Responds to occasional off-hours queries when on rotation and works night shifts on a rotating basis to provide Field Engineering coverage for critical project installations, 

• Communicates consistently with the Engineer of Record to ensure that the design intent is always met, 

• Communicates design changes and / or field engineering changes with construction and engineering teams, 

• Reviews submittal packages and provide feedback (contractor Project Execution Plan (PEP), Quality Management Plan (QMP), vendor packages, shop drawings, Field Installation Work Plans (FIWPs), Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), inspection records, turn-over packages), 

• Reviews, addresses, and manages the following construction documents:  

• Technical Queries (TQs),  

• Field Change Notices (FCNs),  

• Field Change Reports (FCRs), and 

• Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) 

• Participates in all training as required by the IPT, 

• Uses ICC platforms and systems to gather information, submit queries, notices, and reports,  

• Participates in the site risk and control ownership as required by the IPT, 

• Ensures they are adhering to and exhibiting Jansen core values. 

SKILLS / JOB KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Recognized bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Structural, Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation, Mining or similar) or equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience, 

• Professional Engineering license valid in Province of Saskatchewan is seen as an asset, 

• Minimum 7-10 years of relevant operational or construction engineering experience, 

• Mining experience within shafts or underground mining is seen as an asset,

• Strong understanding of quality management processes and systems, ISO standards and auditing processes related to major project delivery or program management, 

• High attention to detail, and commitment to quality outcomes, 

• Knowledge of SPF (SmartPlant Foundation) and SPR (SmartPlant Review) considered an asset. Must be comfortable using 3D data centric platforms, 

• Ability to operate effectively and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment utilizing agile methodologies, 

• Demonstrated ability to learn and quickly comprehend new concepts and technologies, 

• Overall working knowledge of large capital projects, including engineering, contracts & procurement, construction, commissioning, project controls, health & safety, environment & community, and risk workflows, 

• Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, 

• Demonstrated strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills including root cause analysis training, 

• Motivates themselves and peers to promote and engage in team collaboration, knowledge sharing, and relationship building activities,  

• Ability to foster and maintain an inclusive environment with the site team while grounding to the Jansen core values.
