Sr. Design Manager - UX/UI (Temporary Position)

At Balsam Brands, our mission in life is to unlock creative talent and create joy together.  We are looking for a Senior Design Manager – UI/UX, with a strategic vision for the future of our websites, who can develop a team of UI and UX designers and find efficiencies to support day-to-day operations. They will also help evolve our brand's expression with a focus on user-centric design and seasonal creative guidance. One must be innovative, maintain a customer-first attitude, be detail-oriented, and work collaboratively with cross-functional partners.

Key areas of responsibilities include leading a team of UI and UX designers that are responsible for multiple websites’ site and other digital products and tools. You will partner closely with other functional teams, Customer & Data Insights, User Research, Product, Online Merchandising, Business Analysts, Marketing, and Engineering to design an experience that is innovative, intuitive, and expresses our brand's personality.

This position is a part of the Creative Team that supports all brands. It is very hands-on, collaborative, and action-oriented with mentoring opportunities. This position is responsible for helping transform the brand vision into a digital experience through collaboration and testing. You can effectively evaluate a project brief and translate design ideas into detailed requirements that allow for future growth.

Notes: This position reports to the Creative Director and is a temporary position, expected to last 3-6 months with possible extension. This temporary role can be in-office, or remotely located in California, Idaho, Washington, Illinois, Texas, or Missouri. Please submit a cover letter and resume. What you’ll do:

  • Provide creative direction and guidance, with a focus on inspiring users, while maintaining visual consistency within our brand, campaign, and website style guides
  • Maintain a holistic view of each brand and a deep understanding of the customer journey and how they differ
  • Work closely with Product and Engineering to understand needs and requirements, support new features, and influence the roadmap and future planning
  • Solve user and business problems using design; Build interactive prototypes for user testing, deliver lo-fi wireframes and final UI based on user feedback and branding
  • Write user interface specifications and work closely with Engineers to ensure that design specifications are implemented
  • Lead a collaborative team of designers, copywriters, and media on seasonal campaign development and deliverables
  • Work closely and collaboratively with cross-functional teams to ensure business goals and requirements are met and communicate decisions and processes
  • Present concepts and design solutions to cross-functional partners for feedback
  • Maintain a strong understanding of current technologies including design software and interactive technology
  • Be proactive: address challenges, support process, and make recommendations for improvement
  • Highly self-motivated, with excellent communication skills, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills
  • Advocate for design, customers, and accessibility best practices
  • Responsible for managing direct reports workloads, ensuring that timelines are met
  • Assess the performance of direct reports and provide the required directions and coaching

What you bring to the table:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Web/Graphic Design, or similar, or have equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience with consumer brands in a high-volume, fast-paced production environment
  • An online portfolio displaying exceptional strategic, conceptual, and visual design (please specify which work was created 100% by you vs. by a team)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Zeplin, Invision, and Microsoft Office
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Flexible and able to adapt to the changing needs of the business
  • Knowledge of responsive design
  • Understanding of front-end technologies (HTML/CSS/JS) to help inform design and interaction decisions
  • Understanding of UX methodologies and tools to support visual design solutions
  • Support process, proactively identifying challenges and fostering actionable solutions

Bonus (but not required) if you have:

  • Experience in branding
  • Experience in photo/video creation and animation
  • Experience with Trello, Jira, Slack
