Job Description

Job Title: Two positions available - Food Learning Locator Intern & Marketing and Outreach Intern

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, 10-20 hours per week

Reporting to Title: Manager, FSI Community Development

 

SUMMARY: 

The Food Learning Locator Intern will assist in the outreach, marketing and maintenance of the Food Learning Locator (FLL) and will foster skills that will contribute to their professional development. 

The Food Security Initiative Marketing and Outreach Intern will be responsible for expanding the marketing and maintenance of the Food Learning Locator to increase target audience’s brand recognition of and engagement with the tool inWashington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. The Food Security Initiative intern will be responsible foridentifying/researching social media outreach tactics, conferences advertising/tabling opportunities, and other marketing and outreach options in our region. 

The Food Security Initiative Interns will collaborate with Foundation staff and external organizations to promote the site to:

  • Increase the number or organizations and programs on the map
  • Increase overall site traffic
  • Increase the number of resources featured on the site
  • Collect anecdotal partner and community feedback

The Foundation structures our work through a portfolio of interconnected initiatives. All staff play a role in connecting and synthesizing knowledge across teams to further the Foundations’ Mission and Vision. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marketing and Outreach (60%)

  • In collaboration with the Food Security Initiative Manager, Community Development and Communications Manager, research and identify optimal digital and social media tactics – culminating in a promotional strategy for the Food Learning Locator to increase awareness and drive engagement through online channels
  • Research and attend marketing and/or tabling opportunities to promote the Food Learning Locator in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. (Note:These events may fall outside of normal working hours, but with advanced notice interns will be expected to participate in several of these opportunities over the course of the semester.)
  • Manage the rotating monthly program spotlight by selecting and contacting programs and updating the site
  • Assist in the maintenance and review of organizational and programmatic information on the site, including phone and email outreach to program managers
  • Collaborate with the Food Security Initiative Manager to coordinate and provide technical assistance to users and enhance how the Food Learning Locator is leveraged
  • Conduct research and outreach to add new organizations to the Food Learning Locator
  • Conduct additional marketing and outreach research as needed

 

Research and Development (20%)

  • Research and identify potential new data and content (e.g., program subcategories, mobile programs, resources) that could be added to the Food Learning Locator
  • Collect feedback on the site for development/maintenance and research ideas to improve the site’s user experience and interface

 

Administration (15%)

  • Prepare/Order marketing materials including printed communications materials and promotional items
  • Assist the Director, Information Technology and Food Security Initiative Manager, Community Developmentto track and evaluate FLL site traffic and engagement
  • Attend meetings, as requested, related to communications and marketing support 
  • Compose routine and more complex written correspondence and presentations
  • Perform other administrative tasks and projects as required.

 

Professional Development (5%)

Complete the following developmental routines as arranged by the Foundation:

  • Participate in general developmental trainings
  • Complete one mid-semester reflection of performance and growth 
  • Provide program evaluation at the end of the semester

 

This is a paid position at $15 or $16 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours per week, commensurate with experience. Up to 20% of hours may be completed remotely. The Foundation will cover any travel-related expenses that fall outside of the intern’s normal commute to the Foundation’s Bethesda office.

 

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.   • Required Hours: Minimum of 10 hours per week and maximum of 20
  • Length of Internship: One semester/Four months, with potential to be renewed for an additional semester
  • Desired Major: Marketing, Communications, Environmental Studies, Food Studies, Urban Sustainability, Nutrition, Agriculture, Health Education, social science or a related field
  • Academic Experience Minimum: Completion of at least one year of college 
  • Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.0
  • Skilled in Microsoft Excel and Word and operation of standard office equipment
  • Comfortable with learning how to use new systems and technology as required
  • Ability to travel independently in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia (car not required)
  • Self-starter and the ability to manage multiple project
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language at a college level and also understand literacy concepts required for the position and learn to interpret and comprehend company policies and procedures
  • Ability to convey necessary information accurately, listen effectively and ask questions when clarification is needed
  • Ability to effectively cope with change and work independentlyDemonstrates proficient collaborative, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with diverse stakeholders (farmers, nutritionists, community members, etc.); 
  • Ability to complete projects accurately and within deadlines
  •  Interest in marketing, online/digital tools and communication, nonprofit work and/or food systems.
