Job Description

Summary:

The Specialist Sustainability Business Support, Environment and Safety evaluates and responds to customer inquiries and demands around sustainable development and social responsibility activities of the BIC Group. The position serves as a single point of contact in the USA for customer technical inquiries. The position supports the Manager, Environment and Safety by completing the Company’s annual Environmental and Safety KPI surveys for the Carolina operations and contributing to EHS program management.

  • Facilitate the development and execution of commercial, operational and innovation directives for a variety of sustainability and technical issues associated with BIC’s customers. Monitor and respond to the sustainability and regulatory needs and interests of the BIC business teams. Evaluate and respond to customer inquiries, requests and programs regarding sustainability and social responsibility associated with BIC products, manufacturing, and operations. Answer survey questions, participate in supplier assessment programs, and participate in audits to demonstrate compliance with Company and customer standards for sustainability and/or social responsibility with focused attention on timely, complete, and appropriate responses to customer-driven requests and programs.
  • This role functions as a central sustainability and regulatory expeditor between Bic commercial teams, customers, Group Sustainable Development, Supply Chain, and Legal for all customer-driven issues to maintain and improve upon Bic’s leadership in corporate responsibility initiatives. Identify and drive forward with relevant opportunities for improvement where they may benefit the business or future performance.
  • Provide technical and administrative support and liaison with the Company’s internal experts and Legal team to fulfill or resolve any customer technical inquiries (regulatory, product safety, storage, transport, waste disposal, cybersecurity, etc.) Track inquiries to completion while ensuring consistency and accuracy. In situations where internal experts may not exist, this role will research and validate answers in conjunction with appropriate technical advisors and Legal.
  • Improve and maintain plant specific EHS management systems for pollution prevention and risk prevention. Collect, analyze, track and report EHS performance KPIs in support of Group sustainable development initiatives. Audit results, identify opportunities, and implement appropriate improvement plans.
  • Provide support in plant-specific environmental regulatory compliance and continuous improvement programs for air, water, waste, hazardous chemicals, and DOT security, including routine oversight and coaching of staff and internal auditing of program elements.
  • Assist with the development, management and implementation of plant-specific safety compliance, behavior-based safety, and safety improvement programs for employees, fire safety, emergency response and other risk management activities. Assist with employee training. Assist with leading and documenting job hazard analyses, pre-start-up safety review, management of change review and organizing industrial hygiene surveys.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in a related field
  • 0-3 years' of experience
  • Customer-service, technical, and legal mindset
  • Knowledge and experience in sustainability and social responsibility highly preferred
  • Ability to develop thorough knowledge of BIC's global organizational structure, SD activities, factory/site activities, and initiatives related to EHS, social responsibility, and packaging
  • Current knowledge of USA EPA (air, water, waste, right-to-know), US OSHA,  and US DOT regulations preferred, ability to learn essential
  • Comfortable working in an uncertain environment and confident to reach out to experts who have the data or technical knowledge to suggest & validate approaches
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including formal and informal presentation skills, the ability to engage persons at all levels of the business, and an ability to coach and influence persons without exerting direct authority
  • Comfort working with persons of diverse cultures, geographies, and time zones
  • Strong leadership skills and a willingness to lead by example
  • Willingness and ability for day travel several times per month

 

Technical Skills:

  • Microsoft suite, including intermediate Excel skills (ability to set up, link and follow a spreadsheet, perform basic calculations and analysis)
  • Ability to analyze data trends through time, including pareto analysis and statistical analysis
  • Competencies in the sciences, math, and manufacturing
  • Ability to learn and navigate a number of customer provided web-based interfaces
  • Advanced PowerPoint and video making skills a plus
  • Knowledge and competencies in injury prevention, behavior-based safety, incident investigation and hazard analysis a plus
