Job Description

The Lower-level Controls Specialist will serve as a crucial subject matter expert for the baggage handling system (BHS), overseeing the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all OT hardware, software, and control systems associated with the BHS at Calgary International Airport. This role will contribute to the enhancement of system efficiency, uptime, and performance through calibration, maintenance, and upgrading of electrical and control equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct troubleshooting and execute preventive and corrective maintenance activities for all PLC and controls systems. 
  • Manage the BHS network connections.
  • Develop and implement operational procedures for OT (Operational technology) related activities, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
  • Conduct thorough testing of software and firmware to ensure system integrity and functionality.
  • Monitor and quickly troubleshoot PLC and Field-Bus systems to minimize downtime and maintain operational continuity. 
  • Collaborate with the Hotline team to resolve system issues in a timely manner.
  • Set up, configure, and deploy various software products, ensuring proper functionality within the BHS.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive backup protocols to safeguard against data loss or system failure.
  • May be required to come to the site after hours in case of BHS disruptions.

Qualifications

  • Two or four year college degree in a technical field.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in lower-level controls in the industrial automation industry.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming.
  • Knowledge of SCADA programming.
  • Ability to read and interpret functional block diagrams.
  • Knowledge of industrial networks, i.e. Ethernet or PROFINET.
  • Knowledge of PLC hardware, I/O devices, variable frequency drives and motion controls.
  • Certification(s) in/from Siemens, Rockwell or Allen Bradley.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds, work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure. 
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment with a 24/7 operation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain airport security clearance.

Work Environment 

  • Operates in a fast-paced airport setting with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and variable temperatures. 
  • Requires flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as part of a rotating shift schedule. 
  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, and standing across a large terminal and baggage areas.
