Job Description

Avery Dennison is looking for a senior analytical scientist with experience in materials characterization and demonstrated laboratory strength particularly either in Chromatography or Rheology.  The position will be with the Materials Science and Characterization (MSC) Group, which primarily supports R&D activities at Avery Dennison’s Mentor, OH location, chartered to support and resolve technical problems ranging from long-term projects to urgent manufacturing and quality issues stemming from locations across Avery Dennison’s global operations. Demonstrated strong skills in reducing complex problem solving studies to cogent root-cause scientific studies across multi-analytical techniques are critical. Clear communication of results and providing actionable intelligence guiding approaches as part of larger cross-functional teams is a must.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct analyses using Chromatography techniques (GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC, LC/MS, GPC, GPC-MALS/DV to solve challenging problems in the fields of chemistry, material science, and engineering that are important to Avery Dennison.  

  • Render strong capability in polymeric composition and structure determination spanning multiple expertise and SMEs across chromatography, spectroscopic and rheological analysis. Interpret data, write technical reports, and communicate analytical results with MSC and divisional scientists in a high-quality, professional, and timely manner. 

  • Develop, validate and document SOPs of test methods for both routine and non-routine analysis, help identify trends and solve problems at the elemental level using sound fundamentals and creativity. 

  • Solve problems against the backdrop of establishing structure-process-property correlations and drive mechanistic understanding.

  • A background including Spectroscopy and interfacing to separation techniques is a plus. 

  • A background in LIMS / SDMS / Knowledge Management is also desirable. 

  • Adeptly troubleshoot & maintain and administer existing Chromatography instruments.  Seek out and evaluate new characterization tools and techniques to support new product development and cogent problem-solving needs. 

  • Direct and mentor junior staff in daily tasks to meet project needs, efficiently prioritize and deploy self and other resources. 

  • Apply skills and knowledge in the field of Polymer Science, Chromatography & Statistics to develop and implement test methods for problem solving and new product development projects. 

  • Inventory and order materials to maintain lab supplies in conjunction with other lab staff. 

  • Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams and by conducting laboratory and pilot plant safety audits. 

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Polymer Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.

  • 10+ years of related industrial research with project management experience. 

  • Prior experience with people management is a plus.

  • Demonstrated expertise in Chromatography including maintenance and troubleshooting of chromatographic instrumentation. 

  • Alternately, outstanding candidates with deep expertise in polymer melt, solution and soft matter rheology will also be considered.

  • Strong preference given to individuals who have experience characterizing polymeric materials.

  • A background interfacing separation techniques to mass spectroscopic detection such as ESI, APCI, qTOF, etc. is a plus.

  • Knowledge of polymers/coatings and techniques to characterize, as well as a good breadth in general, organic, and polymer chemistry principles and practices is desirable.  

  • Effective written and oral communications. Ability to work across functional groups and divisions.

  • Good computer skills; experience with Chromatography data systems and LIMS is a plus.  

  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and solve problems using the above mentioned disciplines and techniques.  

  • High level of motivation, initiative, and energy.  

  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team.  

  • Ability to interact effectively with both internal and external customers.
